Use the Work To Do widget to give learners a single, accessible list of course activities that are overdue or upcoming. Add the widget to your organization homepage to aggregate items from all courses, or to a course homepage to limit items to that course. This topic follows Knowledge Team voice and accessibility guidelines.
What appears in Work To Do
The widget displays these activity types when they have a due date or end date:
- Assignments
- Checklists
- Content
- Courses
- Discussions
- Surveys
- Quizzes
Modules are automatically removed from the widget once all trackable items within the module are completed, even if the module has a future due date. By default, the widget focuses on learner-facing activities. For users with multiple roles (such as instructors who are also enrolled as learners), instructor evaluation tasks are hidden to reduce clutter.
Learners can manually remove overdue activities from their list if they have the required permission. Dismissing an activity removes it from the Work To Do widget and tool but does not mark the activity as complete or affect its status in the original tool (such as Assignments or Quizzes).
Time window and item limits
- By default, the widget shows overdue items from the past 12 weeks and upcoming items for the next 2 weeks (up to a maximum 10-week window).
- Regardless of time range, the widget shows a maximum of 6 items.
- If there are more, select View all work to launch the Work to Do widget, which lists all items with due or end dates in the upcoming year.
You can customize the default behavior and time ranges for your organization with these configuration variables:
- d2l.Tools.WorkToDo.OverdueWeekLimit: sets the number of weeks to display overdue items, up to 52.
- d2l.Tools.WorkToDo.UpcomingWeekLimit: sets the number of weeks to display upcoming items, up to 16.
- d2l.Tools.WorkToDo.ShowInstructorEvaluationTasks: controls whether instructor evaluation activities appear in the widget for users with dual roles. By default, this is disabled.

Note: To extend or limit the widget’s upcoming or overdue ranges, contact D2L Support to update these properties for your organization. |
Enable the Work To Do widget for your organization
Prerequisites
- You have a widget-based homepage available to edit.
- Your learner roles have permission to view the widget.
- Your learner roles have permission to dismiss overdue activities (optional).
To turn on the tool for your organization
- From Admin Tools, select Organization Tools.
- Toggle Work To Do to On.
To set the permission for learner roles
- From Admin Tools, click Roles and Permissions.
- For each relevant learner role at the Organization level or Course Offering level, enable the following permissions:
- View the Work To Do Widget: Allows users to see the widget on their homepage.
- Dismiss overdue activities: Allows learners to manually remove overdue items from their list.
Refer to Edit role permissions and properties for more information.

|
Important: The Dismiss overdue activities permission only applies to items in the Overdue category. Upcoming activities cannot be dismissed. After dismissing an activity, an alert appears briefly with an Undo option, allowing learners to restore the activity if it was dismissed by mistake. Once an item is dismissed, the learner can still access the activity directly through the specific tool or Content area.
