Discovery helps you connect your organization with Brightspace tools and D2L websites by helping you search for and find your Brightspace instance (Parent Org Unit) name and URL.
Note: Brightspace also includes a tool called Discover. Discover tool is a tool that allows users to search for and self-enroll in course offerings. It is not the same as Discovery. For more information refer to About Discover. |
How does Discovery collect my Organization Name and URL and why is it important?
Discovery collects this information from the Parent Org Unit or top-level org name setup in Brightspace. This information is set and can be changed by navigating to Admin Tools > Org Unit Editor. Then, with the top-level organization selected (Default), select Edit Properties. The field labeled Name sets the name that appears in all organization searches sourced from Discovery.
Note: To learn more about how Brightspace organization administration and Org Unit Types refer to About Org administration. |
Your URL or Web Server Name is set during the initial creation of your Brightspace instance. This URL is also stored by Discovery.
Important: When you are creating a new top-level Parent Org Unit or choosing to Edit Properties of an existing top-level Parent Org Unit, think carefully about the Name that you are entering for your instance of Brightspace. This name is saved as part of Discovery. If you do not enter an org unit name during that process, you will not be able to select that name when signing up as a new user in Brightspace Community. The result is that your role in Brightspace Community will not be associated with a known organization, and you will not have access to Brightspace Product Idea Exchange dashboard, the Approved Support Contact Support Portal, and other vital resources available to registered Brightspace Community members.
