As an administrator, you can set Login Logic to allow users to land on different org units (campus, course offering, department, programs, etc.) in their org structure after they log in or when they click on the My Home icon in Brightspace, providing them a branded experience right after they log in. This is a common use case for any organization working with an external organization or organizations that may require branding for their own area in Brightspace.
There are two ways to configure Login Logic:
-
Role-Based Login Logic: Based on a user’s primary role
- Org Unit Type Login Logic: Based on a user’s enrollment in an org unit with a specific org unit type
Role-Based Login Logic
Role-Based Login Logic redirects users based on their primary role, for example, the role of the user at the org level. If the user logging in has a role that matches a Login Logic rule entry for that role, they are redirected to a specific org unit configured in that rule. The org unit they are redirected to can be of any type, like a course offering. However, the user must be enrolled in that org unit or they will continue to land on the default org level homepage.
Org Unit Type Login Logic
Org Unit Type Login Logic redirects users based on their enrollment in an org unit with a specific org unit type when that user logs in to Brightspace. If the user is enrolled in an org unit of that type, the user is redirected to the homepage of the specific org unit they are enrolled in.
Considerations
There are some considerations when enabling Login Logic in Brightspace:
- Login Logic can only be set by D2L specifically during implementation. However, if Login Logic is required later for any organization, contact your Customer Sales Executive.
- Users must be enrolled in the org unit for the homepage they are intended to land on.
- For Org Unit Type Login Logic, if users are enrolled in more than one org unit of the same type, Login Logic will redirect the user to the main org homepage by default because it is unable to determine a priority homepage to redirect the user to. In this case, you may want to place the standard My Org Units widget on the org homepage to allow the user to manually navigate to each individual homepage. Some tools only work on the org level homepage, which means using Login Logic with these tools will not work for desired landing pages.
- Any tool that has an org-level-only permission in Roles & Permissions only appears at the main org level and does not appear with custom landing pages. This is because the homepage is the main page for the organization’s environment whereas the landing page could be any page from other org units, such as a department or semester. Some examples of these widgets are:
- Quick Eval
- Manager Dashboard
- Discover
- Insights
- ePortfolio/Portfolio
- Calendar
- Datasets
