Export grades to work with learner grade data outside Brightspace, create a file that you can update and import back into the grade book, or keep a record of selected grades.
Before you begin
- Choose CSV if you plan to update the file and import it back into Brightspace. Choose Excel if you want to review or work with the data in a spreadsheet.
- If you plan to import the file back into Brightspace, include Org Defined ID or Username as the key field so Brightspace can identify each learner.
- The Weighted grade option is available only when the course uses the Weighted grading system.
To export learner grades
- From the navigation bar, click Grades.
- On the Enter Grades page, click Export.
Under Export Options, configure the export:
- Under Export Grade Items For, set Filter by to All Users, or filter the learners by Sections or Groups and click Apply.
Under Key Field, select the learner identifier to include.
 | Note: If you plan to import the file back into Brightspace, include Org Defined ID or Username so Brightspace can identify each learner. |
- Under Sort By, select how to order the learners.
- Under Grade Values, select one or more grade values to export.
- Under User Details, select the learner information to include.
- Under Choose Grades to Export, select the grade categories and grade items to include.
- Click Export to CSV or Export to Excel.
- When the export is ready, click Download.
- Click Close.
The exported file is downloaded to your device.
Additional considerations
- Email addresses: By default, Brightspace exports each learner's internal email address. Your administrator can configure Brightspace to export external email addresses instead. If this setting is enabled and a learner does not have an external email address, the exported value is blank. Exporting external email addresses may take longer in large courses.
- Group and section membership: If a learner belongs to multiple groups in a group category or multiple course sections, the memberships appear as a comma-separated list in one cell.
- Automatic Zero: The Automatic Zero for Missed Submissions setting is not included in the export. Any zero already assigned by the setting is exported as a standard points grade when points grades are included.
- Filters and visibility: The export does not use the search filters or view settings currently applied to the Enter Grades page. It uses the Filter by selection on the Export Grades page and may include learners who are not visible in your current grade book view.

Note: A configuration variable controls whether external email addresses are exported. Contact your administrator or D2L Support if your organization needs to change this setting. |
