Gradebook icons and notifications

Child Item

Icons in the grade book identify the type of activity associated with a grade item. A new submission indicator (orange dot) on an activity icon indicates that a submission or attempt requires instructor attention.

Understand the new submission indicator

Activity	The new submission indicator appears when...	The indicator is removed when...
Assignment	A learner submits an assignment that has not been viewed.	An instructor views the submission.
Discussion	A learner posts to a discussion topic and the post has not been viewed.	The instructor viewing the grade book views the post or selects Assess Topic.
Quiz	A learner submits a quiz attempt that requires instructor review, such as an attempt containing written response questions.	An instructor publishes the grade for the attempt.

The new submission indicator (orange dot) appears when a learner submits an assignment that has not been viewed by an instructor.

Viewing the assignment removes the indicator.
Publishing the assignment grade does not affect the submission's read status.
Selecting Mark as Unread causes the indicator to reappear.

This is the paper note and pencil icon used for notes.

Note: In a course with multiple instructors, viewing the assignment removes the indicator for everyone. If one evaluator later marks the submission as unread, the indicator reappears for everyone.

Discussion icons and notifications

The new submission indicator (orange dot) appears when a learner posts to a discussion topic and the post has not been viewed by an instructor.

Viewing the discussion post removes the indicator for the instructor who viewed it.
Selecting Assess Topic marks the post as read for that instructor during the grading workflow.
Selecting Mark as Unread causes the indicator to reappear for that instructor.

Note: Discussion read status is tracked separately for each instructor. Viewing a discussion removes the new submission indicator only for the instructor who viewed it. Selecting Mark as Unread causes the indicator to reappear for that instructor.

Quiz icons and notifications

The new submission indicator (orange dot) appears when a learner submits a quiz attempt that requires instructor review. This commonly occurs when a quiz contains written response questions.

Automatically graded quizzes do not display the indicator.
Opening a quiz attempt does not remove the indicator.
Publishing the grade for the attempt removes the indicator.
Retracting a published grade causes the indicator to reappear.
