New Content Experience Issues

Question

My course is going to be transitioning to the New Content Experience. I have a Sandbox course and have used it to test the functionality on different devices.

For Surveys, Discussions, Quizzes, and Project Assignments - to access the content it is showing up in the middle of the screen saying "Open Discussion" or "Open Survey" or "Open Quiz" and it is opening up in a new tab and not opening up in the same browser tab. Is there a way to have all activities open in the same browser tab and not a new browser tab?

On a mobile device after the new tab is opened the only way to get back to the previous content is to go to the previous tab and you cannot use the navigation/browser arrows to get back to the content.

My second issue is with course gating. I had course gating in the current Classic content and what would happen is after the student completes the content piece it unlocks the next piece and the navigation arrows can be used. In NCE the pop-up below is showing up and if you X out and don't click on the hyperlink you need to refresh the page for the new content to release. The navigation arrows is showing as grayed out and cannot use it to move forward. Are their limitations on gating in NCE?

That is very interesting. I think it would be best to create a case with the Support team to get a deeper look into exactly what is happening in your course. I am not sure if you are an ASC, by your system admin should be able to submit the case via the ASC portal if you don't have access to that.

Thank you for the response, Jenn - I reached out to my system admins and the variable is enabled but it is still causing discussions, quizzes, and the assignments to open in a new tab. I am using a Sandbox course to test before the actual switch is made to NCE. Is that the issue? I am completely testing it as a student, but the discussion, quizzes, and assignments are not opening in the same tab - they are opening in a new tab. How do we get this fixed?

Hi there Jocelyn!

There is a config variable that your system admins can enable where assessable activites are opened inline. The variable is: d2l.Tools.Content.LessonsRenderActivitiesInline. Note at this time that it works for Assignments, Quizzes, Discusstion, and LTI links; at this time Survey's are not included.

For your second question, there are a few things that you can do. We are going to be introducing a feature called Sequential Learning, there is a great video walkthrough on our roadmap about half-way down the page. Sequential learning will accomplish exactly what you have described. While you wait for that to be released, back in January we introduced new options for content with release conditions attached so you can better customize how your learners can see or access some of that content, instead of it being totally hidden. Here is the note for that release. What you noted about having to refresh the page to see the new content, at this time, that is required if you don't click on the link in the pop-up. I think this will change once Sequential Learning is fully released.
