Is there a way in templated versions of D2L to search for all forum posts by a named student?

I am using D2L at a University that uses templated provisioning so I have little control over what I can do on the platform. The templating is what our administrators do so that course-wide over our University all students and faculty see the same thing, thus minimizing multiple learning curves between courses and zero transition shock.

In addition, our University does not set up the Gradebook with separate columns for separate discussions :-( so I cannot use the platform to give feedback for each forum discussion. Currently I can Print a Thread, so have a transcript of all posts. I use a variety of methods to analyze this transcript. Is there a way to create by student a listing of all their posts or a listing of all their posts by forum?

Many thanks, in advance.

Jack

    Hello Jack,

Thank you for reaching out with your question.

Currently, there is no way in the Brightspace UI to see all discussion posts by a specific user on a single page. There is an alternative solution that would require access to data sets in Data Hub.

The Discussion Posts Brightspace Data Set returns details on discussion posts for all users. This is a CSV report that includes a column titled "Thread", which contains the discussion thread name. To see posts by a specific student, the report can be filtered by the student's UserId. The Users BDS contains information on all users, including their names and UserIds.

    Thank you,
    John

    Thanks John!

much appreciated. The method you have described would be too cumbersome here for a variety of reasons, including that it takes forever to get agreement from the committee that oversees any such special requests.

I have developed an easy solution for a Print thread transcript PDF, parsed by either a Gemini Gem, or a Claude Project, so I will continue with that for now. I crave the days when we were all given our own course shell and could use most of the functionality of D2L (the good old days!)

    cheers, Jack
