Microsoft is retiring several classic Microsoft Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) apps on September 17, 2026. If your institution uses these integrations in Brightspace, now is the time to prepare for the transition to the Microsoft 365 LTI experience before the start of the new academic year.
Deploying Microsoft 365 LTI ahead of the fall term will help ensure instructors can continue using Microsoft tools without disruption and avoid creating new content with integrations that are nearing retirement.
What's changing?
The following classic Microsoft LTI apps will be retired on September 17, 2026:
- Microsoft OneDrive LTI
- Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook LTI
- Microsoft Teams Assignments LTI
- Microsoft Reflect LTI
The earlier Teams Classes LTI and Teams Meetings LTI integrations were already retired in September 2025.
After September 17, 2026:
- The classic LTI apps will no longer function.
- Existing links and placements created with these classic apps in Brightspace courses will stop working.
- Files, notebooks, Teams, meetings, assignments, and Reflect check-ins previously created through the classic apps will remain available through Microsoft 365; they will not be affected.
Why the change? Microsoft has consolidated its education integrations into a single Microsoft 365 LTI application built on the LTI 1.3 Advantage standard. Instead of deploying and maintaining multiple Microsoft LTI tools, LMS administrators deploy a single application that provides access to Microsoft 365 experiences within Brightspace.
Deploy Microsoft 365 LTI before the new school year
If your institution has not yet deployed Microsoft 365 LTI, D2L recommends doing so before instructors begin preparing courses for the new academic year. Follow Microsoft instructions to ensure a smooth transition for both administrators and instructors.
An early deployment gives administrators time to validate the integration, configure the apps available to instructors, and communicate any workflow changes before courses become active.
Deploying Microsoft 365 LTI before the school year begins also helps institutions:
- Ensure instructors create new course content using the supported Microsoft 365 LTI experience rather than the retiring classic apps.
- Allow instructors time to become familiar with updated Microsoft 365 workflows.
- Validate the deployment before students return.
Suggested transition plan for Brightspace administrators
1. Deploy Microsoft 365 LTI
If you have not already deployed Microsoft 365 LTI, complete the deployment in Brightspace using the Microsoft instructions and guidance.
If your institution has already deployed Microsoft 365 LTI, Microsoft recommends reviewing the latest deployment guidance, confirming Microsoft 365 administrator consent, and verifying which Microsoft applications are enabled for instructors. A redeployment is not required.
2. Stop using the classic tools for new content
After Microsoft 365 LTI is configured in the instance, rename, remove or disable placements of the classic LTI tools where practical, so instructors no longer create new links using retiring integrations.
3. Review existing courses
Identify courses that currently use:
- OneDrive LTI
- OneNote Class Notebook LTI
- Teams Assignments LTI
- Reflect LTI
This inventory helps determine which links will need to be recreated or replaced with Microsoft 365 LTI links before the retirement date.
Existing course content or Source Courses that rely on files linked or embedded via the classic Microsoft OneDrive LTI will need to be replaced with Microsoft 365 LTI links. After September 17, 2026, these links will stop working.
Frequently asked questions
Will existing Microsoft content be deleted?
No. Although the classic LTI links will stop working after September 17, 2026, the Microsoft resources themselves—including files, notebooks, Teams, meetings, assignments, and Reflect check-in will remain available through Microsoft 365.
Will instructors lose access to Teams assignments?
No. Existing Teams assignments continue to exist. Microsoft indicates that assignments created with the legacy experience can be copied and reused using the Microsoft Education Assignments workflow available through Microsoft 365 LTI.
Can administrators control which Microsoft features are available?
Yes. Microsoft 365 LTI allows LMS administrators to enable or disable Microsoft applications (such as Teams, OneNote, and Reflect) across the institution. Instructors can also configure which available features appear within their own courses.
