There are many different notifications that are available for users within Brightspace. An administrator can configure default notifications that dictate which notifications are enabled for any newly created user. The user can then choose to enable to disable notifications on their own account as they see fit.
Administrators can configure the default notifications using Admin Tools → Notifications
Users can change their own notifications settings using Profile name → Notifications
When viewing the list of available notifications and making decisions on which ones would apply to you, the names of the notifications provide context on what triggers the notification. For example, Announcements - announcement updated sends a notification when an existing announcement is updated.
However, there are some notifications that are not easily understood by the name and the user context to which that notification applies to (for example: is the notification for learners or instructors).
Here is a list of notifications along with details on what would trigger the notification and which types of users it is meant for.
Activity Feed - new comments from others on a post
- Instructor focused
- Notification sent when users (learners) comment on activity feed posts
Activity Feed - new posts created by others
- Learner focused
- Notification sent if when new posts are created by other users (instructors) within an active course you are enrolled in.
Announcements - new announcement available
- For all user types
- Notification sent when a new announcement has been posted via the Announcements tool.
- If there are any release conditions applied to the announcement, the user must meet the conditions specified to see the announcement.
Announcements - announcement updated
- For all user types
- Notification sent when an existing announcement is updated.
Assignments - assignment feedback released
- Learner focused (for user that has submitted an assignment)
- Notification sent once evaluation/feedback has been published for a submitted assignment.
Assignments - assignment due date or end date is 2 days away
- For all user types
- Notification will be sent if the due date for an assignment is days away for any active courses the user is enrolled in.
Assignments - assignment feedback updated
- Learner focused (for user that has submitted an assignment)
- Notification sent when an updated is made to already published assignment evaluation/feedback.
Assignments - publish all feedback completion
- Instructor focused
- Used when an instructor has evaluated multiple assignment submissions and saves a draft of the evaluation rather than publishes.
- Instructor later clicks the Publish All button to publish all assignment evaluations to students at the same. If there are a large number of evaluations to publish it may take some time.
- Notification is sent once all evaluations/feedback have been published.
Content - content item created
- For all user types
- Notification sent when a new content topic is added and made visible to an active course that the user is enrolled in.
Content - content item updated
- For all user types
- For courses with Classic Content Experience
- Notification is sent when content is added or updated to the Overview section of a Classic Content Course.
- Instructors must check Notify students that the content has changed when updating content.
Content - content overview updated
- For all user types
- Notification is sent when content within the Overview section of course content is updated.
- User must be enrolled in an active course where the Overview section is updated.
- The Overview section is only available with the Classic Content Experience.
- Notification is sent when the Overview section of a Classic Content Course has content added or updated.
Content Service - feedback for content service uploads
- For instructors or admin type users
- Notification will be sent when an upload to the content service has completed. For example: Upload large SCORM file. It may take a while. Notifies you when it has completed the upload.
Discussions - mentioned in a discussion post or thread
- For all user types
- Notification is sent if the user is @ mentioned in a discussion post/thread.
Discussions - new post in a forum, topic, or thread that I subscribed to in instant notifications
- For all user types
- Notification is sent to a user if they have subscribed to a discussion forum, topic, or thread with the option Send me an instant notification and a new post is made.
ePortfolio - feedback added to subscribed items
- For all user types
- Notification is sent whenever feedback (comments or assessments) are added to any item that you are subscribed to.
ePortfolio - another user has subscribed to your updates
- For all user types
- Notification is sent whenever another user subscribes to your items.
ePortfolio - feedback added to my items
- For all user types
- Notification is sent when feedback (comments or assessments) is added to any of your ePortfolio items.
Grades - grade item released
- Learner focused
- Notification is sent when a grade item is published/released
Grades - grade item updated
- Learner focused
- Notification is sent when a previously published grade item has been updated
IPSIS Platform - Batch Completion Summary
- For admin users
- Used when you have a SIS integration via IPSIS Standard CSV files
- Notification is sent when a batch processing job has completed following the upload of the CSV files
Quizzes - quiz due date or end date is 2 days away
- Learner focused
- Notification is sent if a quiz has a defined due date and this date is 2 days away.
- Applies to active courses that the user is enrolled in
