Achievement Scale
A comparative measure of performance, represented by a scale, that indicates the level of mastery or comprehension that a learner has related to a learning outcome. An achievement scale level evaluation is applied both at individual activity assessments and at the course overall level in Mastery View.

Achievement Standards Network (ASN)
A repository of learning standards provided by governments, education agencies, and other organizations which can be imported into course offerings for evaluation of learning.
|
Achievement Threshold
Competency tool context: The minimum result required to complete an activity, defined by the assigned rubric level.
Learning outcome tool context: The minimum level of course overall evaluation on an achievement scale required to have achieved or to have met the requirements for a learning outcome, as identified in relationship to the course achievement scale.

Activity Feed
A course homepage widget that enables instructor and learner engagement through posts and comments.
|
Address Book
A tool which allows users to easily contact other users or group sections enrolled in their course offering.
|
Advanced Assessments
Features which help instructors and administrators to better manage courses with large class sizes and multiple evaluators, delegate and manage evaluator workflows, and reduce bias in marking.
Advanced Assessments allows instructors to:
- Assign multiple evaluators to evaluate a single assignment submission when creating or editing assignments.
- Choose which evaluators can publish grades and feedback for the assignment from the Assignment tool by setting them as publishers.
- Match evaluators to learners.
- Choose from two multi-evaluator workflows: One Shared Evaluation (Co-Marking) or Multiple Individual Evaluations.
The One shared evaluation workflow allows all evaluators to work on the same evaluation together. Publishers release this evaluation to learners.
The Multiple individual evaluations workflow allows evaluators to work on their own evaluations separately. Publishers aggregate results into one final evaluation and release it to learners.

Adjusted Final Grade
In the Grades tool, manually entered final grade that may replace the Calculated Final Grade generated by Brightspace.

Administrator
User responsible for the day-to-day operation and management of Brightspace.
|
Advanced Data Sets (ADS)
Reports that combine data from multiple Brightspace Data Sets. Administrators can generate them as needed by defining one or more filters such as dates and org units. The data behind these data sets is updated daily.
|
Announcements widget
An org unit homepage widget that allows instructors to share important information with all users. Learners can sign up to receive text or email notifications when new and updated announcements appear. An instructor can post directly from the widget or from the Announcements tool, as the widget also displays information from that tool.
The Announcements widget was previously named the News widget.
|
Archiving Competencies
The process of changing a competency status to archived. This keeps a record of who completed a competency while it was active, as opposed to deleting a competency, which removes all records of that competency. Archiving is only available if an organization is using the status feature.
|
Asset
An individual file with no associations. It is not considered a learning object and must be handled by the Learning Object Repository (LOR). For example, this can include a GIF file or a WAV file included in an HTML topic.
|
Attendance tool
Enables teachers and instructors to create registers (lists) and schemes (statuses) to track participation in activities in Brightspace.
|
Auditor
A user with permission to see another user's activity and progress in Brightspace. Auditors can access information about the users they audit in the Auditors widget on the organization homepage, or in the Class Progress tool.
|
Automatically Keep Final Grade Up-To-Date
An option where a learner's Final Calculated Grade is adjusted automatically when one of their other grade items is updated.
|
An online journal with an integrated discussion area. Users can engage in discussions related to journal entries.
|
Brightspace
A learning management system developed by D2L as an all-in-one solution to facilitate online learning for an organization. Brightspace generally refers to the browser-based user interface, as opposed to our mobile app, Pulse. Brightspace was formerly named Brightspace Learning Environment.
|
Brightspace Data Platform (BDP)
A cloud-based analytics platform that provides valuable analyses for all clients. BDP adds analytics value by enhancing the analytics that are built into Brightspace and by powering reports and dashboards in Brightspace Insights.
|
Brightspace Data Sets (BDS)
Tables of raw, user-level data from Brightspace. They are designed to be joined together to build your own reports. Users do not set filters for these reports as all data is included. Brightspace Data Sets automatically generate based on a schedule.

Brightspace Insights
Built on Brightspace Data Platform, provides near real-time reporting visualizations of learners across Brightspace tools to track and monitor progress and improve engagement.
|
Brightspace LeaP
An adaptive learning tool that builds personalized learning paths for learners. Brightspace LeaP creates learning paths based on course-specific, standard, or school-specific learning objectives.
|
Brightspace Learning Object Repository (LOR)
Enables instructors to store and manage learning objects, share content both within an organization and publicly, or gather assets from external sources and learning repositories.
|
Brightspace Student Success System (S3)
Early intervention system that uses Brightspace Data Platform to generate predictive analytics and visual diagnostics designed to help instructors improve a learner’s ability to succeed.
|
Broken Link Viewer tool
Records and reports a continuously updated list of broken links (URLs), images, plug-ins, backgrounds, style sheets, scripts, and Java applets found in an instance of Brightspace.
|
Bulk Course Create (BCC)
A batch tool that allows administrators to create multiple courses or import multiple course packages without having to use the Import/Export/Copy Components interface in Brightspace. Administrators can manage the settings in Bulk Tool Configuration.

Bulk Course Export (BCE)
A batch tool that allows administrators to export multiple course offerings without having to use the Import/Export/Copy Components interface in Brightspace. Administrators can manage the settings in Bulk Tool Configuration.
|
Bulk LOR Upload (BLU)
A user management tool that allows administrators to upload many learning objects or assets into a Learning Object Repository (LOR) without using the LOR web interface. This is useful for publishing curriculum outlines, syllabuses, or defined assets from your document management system into a searchable repository for use within courses.

A grade item type to show a user's calculated grade for only a selected subset of grade items. Even though it is a grade item in the course grade book, it is excluded from the final calculated grade.
|
Calculated Final Grade
The auto-generated final grade, based on the grading formula created in the grade book Grades tool.
|
Calendar tool
Displays upcoming events in a course. Users can post events such as project due dates, office hours, in-class events, and more.
|
Can Exceed Option
A grade item or grade category setting allowing a learner's grades to exceed the maximum points normally allowed by an item or category.
|
Checklist
A list of actions that require completion. Users can highlight important aspects of the course and use it as a visual guide to determine their needs to complete the course.
|
Classlist tool
A directory of names, emails, and group settings that provides instructors with quick access to a full list of the participants in the corresponding course.
|
Collection
An assortment of learning objects in the Learning Object Repository (LOR) which can include harvested resources bundled together.
|
Community
The primary destination for our community of clients, partners, users, developers, and D2L staff who are looking for product documentation and other resources (such as videos, trainings, discussions, and others.
|
Competencies
A tool used to evaluate a learner's knowledge and abilities as they participate in courses or other learning experiences. Brightspace competencies are made up of one or more learning objectives comprising one or more activities. By passing all the activities associated with the learning objectives, a learner passes the competency. Competencies can be created as part of a course offering; however, they will only be accessible within that course offering.

Competency Element
The element at the top of any competency structure. Creating the competency consists of defining the name, description, and variable settings that will impact the associated elements in the competency structure.

Competency Homepage
A homepage that displays an overview of the tasks related to managing competencies. When a user first accesses the Competencies tool, the Competency homepage displays in the right pane of the advanced view.

Competency List Page
A page listing competencies, learning objects, and activities available within the current org unit.
|
Competency Management
The process of identifying skills, knowledge, and performance within an organization to identify gaps and introduce appropriate training, compensation, and recruiting programs based on current or future needs.
|
Competency Structure
A structure made up of competencies, learning objectives, and activities. The complexity of the structure is increased by adding nested competencies or learning objectives.
|
Competency Wizard
A user-friendly, step-by-step process that is used to create a competency, learning objective, and activity and link them all together.
|
Consumption Dashboard
Displays an organization's total annual AI consumption and breakdown of activity by users. This tool is available with D2L Lumi Pro for Brightspace, D2L Lumi for Creator+, or both.
|
Content Tool
An authoring application which enables the creation, editing, organization and deletion of modules and topics in courses. D2L's powerful content authoring tools enable you to create course content, including text, pictures, diagrams, and all types of multimedia without any programming or webpage experience.

Copy Course Bulk (CCB)
A batch tool that allows administrators to copy multiple course offerings to destination courses without overwriting the existing components in the destination courses. Administrators can manage the settings in Bulk Tool Configuration.

Copy Course Components
Enables users to copy quizzes, content, grade items, discussion forums, assignments, and most other types of component from another course offering or a course offering's parent template.

Course
In LOR, a collection of integrated learning objects is used to set the objectives learners are required to complete to achieve a specific goal or competency.
|
Course Achievement Overview
The Course Achievement Overview visualization is a page found in the Grades Mastery View within a course. It is available as part of the Achievement+ add-on package available for purchase.
This page displays the overall outcomes achievement level of all learners and activities combined within a course. The displayed data shows whether learning outcomes set for the course have been Met or Not Met based on the thresholds set for each outcome in the Learning Outcomes tool.

Course Branding Tool (CBT)
A tool which can be used to unify the appearance of courses in bulk based on your Organization or Org Structure where branding can be centrally managed. For example, in the case of a department, all underlying courses can have the same appearance.

Course Builder
Enables instructors to set up their course by interacting with course materials, learning experiences, and assessments using a single interface. Transforms the course design process and set-up into one-step actions.

Course Event
An event added to the Calendar is visible to all course participants.
|
Course Overview Widget
Displays overview information about a course and links to course specific Brightspace Insights reports.
|
Course Package Converter (CPC)
Converts and imports one or more course packages exported from another Learning Management System into the D2L format. Used by D2L Implementation Services with other batch tools to perform course migration for clients.
|
Course Schedule
Page that displays course-related events to the course participants. The schedule can be used to post important course-related events such as due dates, virtual office hours, exam and test information.

Creating Topics From Your Files
An option in the Manage Files tool that creates topic when the course content structure has been created.
|
Current Grade
The grade released to learners in the Grades tool. Instructors must turn on the Release Final Grade setting for learners to see their current grade.
|
Custom Link
Web links that direct a user to external sites from the Course Home navbar.
|
Data Hub allows administrators to access collections of data (data sets) from Brightspace and export them as CSV files for further analysis in third party tools. This gives administrators the flexibility to filter, aggregate, and transform the data according to their needs.
Data Hub is available to all Brightspace Core customers.

Department
An org unit within the structure of an academic organization. It is also a course offering property that refers to the org unit the course offering's parent template is associated with. Changing the department affects all other course offerings associated with the same template.
|
Discussion Activity
Assessment associated with a discussion topic created in Discussions. These activities are evaluated using a rubric.
|
Discussions tool
An asynchronous communication tool that provides forums for users to post messages and reply to one another. The asynchronous nature means users can create and read postings anytime.
|
Drop Ungraded Items
An option that lets instructors remove grade items that have not been graded from the grade book in the Grades tool. These grade items are not counted towards a learner's final grade.

D2L Lumi for Creator+
Provides organizations with the ability to use the Consumption Dashboard and D2L Lumi to generate Practice questions in Content.
|
D2L Lumi Pro for Brightspace
Provides organizations with the ability to use the Consumption Dashboard and D2L Lumi in Brightspace for quiz question, assignment idea, and discussion idea generation.
|
Allows users to send and receive emails within Brightspace. Users can organize mail using folders and store email addresses using Address Book.
|
ePortfolio
An online portfolio that combines social sharing and experiential learning concepts to allow learners to store, share, and reflect on achievements that have shaped their own personal journeys.

Event Logs
Records of all activity associated with a specific learning object or asset in the Learning Object Repository (LOR). These enable users to view information about the usage of the learning object or asset, such as the number of people who have searched, viewed, or linked to it.

Allows users with the required permissions to view details about a class, group, or section's overall grades for a course.
|
Fixed Issues List (FIL)
A cumulative list of Fixed Issues – software problems that have been addressed or corrected. FIL is essential for tracking and managing these issues and includes Article number, Tool name, Title, Summary of the Fixed Issue and the Release or bundle that the fix was, or will be, deployed in.

Force Language
A system setting that allows the course language to override the user's language preferences.
|
Formula
One of the grading systems that determines how grade items in the Grades tool contribute to learners' final grades. Assessments are graded using a custom formula based on a learners' achievements for other grade items.
|
Allows users to use D2L Lumi to generate quiz questions (D2L Lumi Pro for Brightspace), assignment ideas (D2L Lumi Pro for Brightspace), and discussions ideas (D2L Lumi Pro for Brightspace).

Give to All Attempts
When an instructor is grading a quiz by questions and electing to update all attempts at once, this option lets them assign the same score to all learners who attempted the question, regardless of answer.

When an instructor is grading a quiz by questions and electing to update all attempts at once, this option lets them assign the same score to all learners who provided a given answer.
|
Glossary Tool
A list of terms, acronyms, initialisms, and definitions provided to users for clarification. Each course has its own glossary that can be populated with explanations of concepts and terms that are relevant to the course.
|
Grade Book
The part of a course for entering and storing learners' grades in the Grades tool. Grade items represent learners' assessments on assignments, tests, discussion postings, participation, etc. These items represent the work that learners are evaluated on in a course.
|
Grade Book Category
Used to organize and group related grade items into sections in a grade book in the Grades tool. Can be used to manage the points and relative weights of items within each category.
|
Grade Item
The representation of a course's activity within the grade book in the Grades tool. Depending on the activity, they might be able to be evaluated automatically by the learner's score in an associated assessment, by linking the grade to a numeric rubric, or evaluated manually.
|
Grade Range
The grade boundaries that are possible to achieve in a range, from lowest to highest. For example, the term "good" might encompass the numeric grades 70% to 79%.
|
Grade Scheme
An ordered list within the Grades tool for organizing and ranking grades.
|
Grade Scheme Level
A specific level achievable within a grade scheme. It has an upper and lower boundary, a color and a symbol, and an assigned value.
|
Grade Synchronization
Occurs when an instructor enters or updates a learner’s grade in either the Grades tool or the associated tool (for example, Assignments, Discussions, or Quizzes) The grade entered by the instructor in the grade book, or the associated tool, appears in both locations.
|
Grades Setup Wizard
A step-by-step workflow that guides an instructor through the Grades tool settings that must set before grade items and categories are created and graded.
|
Grades Tool
The tool that is used to track grades which includes detailed class statistics (a grade book). Instructors can import, export, or edit single or multiple grades. Learners can view their personal grades.
|
Group and Section Restrictions
Settings that allow you to restrict a forum or topic to be accessible only to members of a specific group or section.
|
Group Locker
Online storage spaces where members of a group can share files. These files can be modified by any member of the group.
|
Discussion topics hidden from learners who do not have the correct permissions to see hidden forums and topics.
|
Hiding a Competency
The ability to ensure that learners cannot view a competency. This can be done by clearing the checkbox labeled Make competency and its children visible to users on the Edit Competency page.
|
Hierarchy, Browsing Elements By
Allows users in the Competency tool to examine elements of a course (for example, assignments, quizzes, or discussions.) starting with the parent competency, which can then be expanded to reveal the children attached to the original element. These children can also be expanded to show their elements or children until all elements have been revealed.

An email configuration that stores users' email accounts on an IMAP server so they can manage their messages from an external application, such as another email application used by your organization.
|
Impersonate
A feature that allows a user with appropriate permissions to impersonate another user. For example, users can use the impersonate option to test the process for how assignments are submitted or to troubleshoot an issue with a quiz.
|
Import
The action of copying external course components into a Brightspace course. Users can import course components created in other Learning Management Systems that have been provided by content vendors or created in a content creation program. To import components, users need a file containing the components in a format supported by the Import tool.
|
Insights Report Builder
Data visualization tool that leverages data from Brightspace. Allows administrators to create dashboards and custom reports and share them with other users in their organization. Insights Report Builder is part of the Performance+ package and is accessed from the Insights Portal.

Instructor
A user responsible for planning and delivering courses to learners in Brightspace.
|
Intelligent Agents
Monitors an org unit to find activity that matches criteria set by a user. The criteria that the agents search for are login activity, course activity, and release conditions in Brightspace. If a criterion is matched an action can be taken such as sending an email or altering enrollments.

Internal Email Address
An email address that is created by and tied to a user’s Brightspace account.
|
Internal Mail (Course Mail)
An email configuration that allows the sending and receiving emails to and from other users in Brightspace. Sending emails to external addresses is not permitted.
|
A cumulative list of Known Issues – software problems that have been identified but not yet resolved. KIL is essential for tracking and managing these issues and includes Article number, Tool name, Accessibility impact, Version found/identified in, Issue description, Article publication date, Summary of the Known Issue and its potential workaround steps.

A user who studies course content in Brightspace. Learners are assessed on the knowledge they acquire on their learning journey.

Learning Management System (LMS)
Software platforms designed to plan, implement, and assess online learning. Brightspace is an LMS developed by D2L.
|
Learning Object (LO)
A kind of document or file such as a quiz, presentation, image, or video, that instructors use to create course content and learning materials for online learning.
|
Learning Outcome (or Standard)
In the Learning Outcomes tool, learning outcomes describe the measurable skills, abilities or knowledge that learners should demonstrate in an assessment activity. Learning outcome statements are student-centered to describe what the students are expected to do.
|
Learning Object Metadata (LOM)
A data model, usually encoded in XML, that is used to describe a learning object and similar digital resources used to support learning. Learning object metadata supports the reusability of learning objects, aids discoverability, and facilitates their interoperability, usually in the context of online learning management systems (LMS).
The IEEE 1484.12.1 – 2002 Standard for Learning Object Metadata is an internationally- recognized open standard (published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association, New York) for the description of "learning objects". Relevant attributes of learning objects to be described are: type of object; author; owner; terms of distribution; format; and pedagogical attributes, such as teaching or interaction style.

Learning Objectives
In the Competency tool, a representation of the things that a learner needs to know to acquire a competency or to become competent in each domain. They are comprised of associated activities which fulfill the learning objective when completed.
|
Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)
The 1Edtech Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)® specification allows Learning Management Systems (LMS) or platforms to integrate external learning tools and content in a standard way.
|
Leave Feedback Page
A page that allows instructors to leave feedback for a learner on their performance. Instructors can also input grades for assignments linked to a grade item and select a rubric level for assignments linked to an activity.
|
Link Between Elements
Created from competencies by adding a learning objective as a child or by adding learning objectives and then adding a competency as a parent.
|
Locations
In the Calendar tool, locations are used for calendar events and seating charts to inform learners where an event or class session is occurring.
|
Locked Topics
Discussion forum topics where learners are unable to post new messages or modify existing messages, but are able to view existing messages in a read only format.
|
Locker
A tool within Brightspace that is used to store files remotely. Each learner's locker is distinct and only accessible by that learner.
|
This option controls whether learners can to see the competency and its attached learning objectives and activities. Instructors can hide approved competencies from learners by changing the status of the competency on the Edit Competency page.
|
Make Competency Available to
This section is only visible if instructors are creating a competency in an org unit above the course offering level. Instructors can share the competency with other org units beneath the current one by clicking Add Org Units.
|
Manage Dates Tool
A tool within Brightspace that is used to view, edit, and offset date availability; set the Calendar status of all content topics and modules, discussion topics and forums, assignment submissions folders, grade categories and items, announcements; and quizzes in a course from one central location.
|
Manage Files Tool
The file management system for a course. From this area, users can upload and organize files associated with a course offering.
|
Manage Groups Tool
A tool within Brightspace that is used to create group work areas for learners. Groups can be used to organize learners' work on projects or assignments, or to create special work areas for learners with different learning needs.
|
Manage Sections Tool
A tool within Brightspace that allows instructors to divide classes into sections to manage large enrollments.
|
Manual Re-Evaluation
An option that, when selected, allows instructors to control when a re-evaluation process takes place. For example, postponing re-evaluation to a non-peak time rather than having the re-evaluation automatically scheduled into the system.
|
Mark as Read
In the Email tool, a button that indicates to a user that a selected email message has already been read.
|
Maximum Final Grade
The highest grade a learner could earn if they score perfectly on all assignments set up in the gradebook.
|
Message Approval
An option that requires instructors with the appropriate permissions to screen and approve all messages before manually posting them into the discussion.
|
Message List
The window that appears after selecting the Message alerts icon. The Message List window allows a user to view all messages sent to their account and other information, including if the messages have been read or not and the date and time that a message was received.
|
Message Ratings
A form of evaluation that, if enabled, allows users to anonymously rate messages posted to a discussion topic. The resulting average rating is displayed above each message and users can then search for messages based on their rating.
|
Minimum Final Grade
The grade a learner would earn if they received a zero on all remaining work.
|
Moderator
A user responsible for maintaining the adherence to rules in an educational environment.
|
Multiple Parents
When the same learning objective or activity is relevant to two or more competencies or learning objectives, those learning objectives or activities can have multiple parents. This option is to avoid having to re-create learning objectives or activities for multiple competencies when those competencies have similar requirements. For example, a "Singing Theory" course and a "Piano Theory" course would both require users to complete activities on reading clefs. In this case, an activity which tests a learner's knowledge of treble clef could be parented by the learning objectives in both the singing theory course and the piano theory course.

My Courses
A widget found on the personal homepage of each user that lists all courses the user is enrolled in or instructing. Users enter the course by clicking on its name.
|
My Home
The first landing page after login. This page may differ from another user's page because the entire site is customizable. Each site administrator or similar user may add or remove tools, rearrange the visual layout, change colors, or create custom tools.
|
My Settings (Preferences)
A widget in the My Home page allows users to adjust system settings such as personal homepages, email addresses, and passwords. The available settings are determined by the roles and permissions set up by the site administrator.
|
The menu across the top of the Brightspace website. The navigation bar contains links to all areas of the site. Navbars within Brightspace are completely customizable, including layout, colors, logos, link text and icons.

Nested Structures
Occurs when one competency is attached beneath another competency; or one learning objective is attached beneath another learning objective.
|
Not Ready Competencies
Unfinished competencies that are hidden from learner view until they are manually changed to ready.
|
Numeric Grade Item
A grade item type where a learner is assigned a value out of a specified total number of points.
|
Objects are assigned one of five statuses: Unassigned, Draft, In Review, Approved, or Archived. The status of an object affects its visibility to learners.
|
Organization (Org)
The top tier of the org unit type hierarchy in Brightspace.
|
Organization Hierarchy
Defines the structure and dependencies within the org unit. An example of a common organization hierarchy is Organization → Department → Course Template → Course Offering → Section/Group. Understanding this hierarchy is especially important for site administrators since they may need to make changes to system variables for specific org unit types.

Organizational Unit (Org Unit)
The standard building block of Brightspace. Org units of multiple types are organized into an org structure.
|
Organizing and Managing Files and Folders
A function of the Manage Files tool that performs basic tasks such as creating, deleting, copying, and moving files and folders; as well as more advanced tasks such as changing file and folder properties and zipping and unzipping files.

Outcome Achievement Dashboard
The Outcome Achievement Dashboard is part of the Achievement+ add-on package available for purchase. It is accessed in the Insights portal. The dashboard displays numerical data based on whether learning outcomes have been Met or Not Met within courses (as defined by achievement thresholds set in Learning Outcomes).

Overridable Language Pack
Overridable Language Pack allows administrators to replace terms in the current Core Language Pack with specific idioms, colloquialisms, and local dialects.

Overriding Results
A setting that overrides a learner's result for any competency, learning objective, or activity and manually set it to complete or incomplete. The override always takes precedence.
|
A type of grading scheme where learners are graded with either a pass or fail.
|
Permission
Access to a specific area, function, or view in Brightspace. Permissions are assigned to roles and can be customized to the needs of an organization. Permissions also promote good interface design where only relevant functions and views for the users' role are available.

Personal Tasks
Private reminders of events and tasks that can be entered into the Calendar tool and are only visible to the user who posted them.
|
Points Grade
Displays learners' grades in points next to the total points available. Example: 6/10.
|
Points System
A type of grading system where graded items are calculated using points. The points assigned to each grade item are totaled for the final grade.
|
Profile
Profile allows users to add personal information, including pictures. This information is viewable from the Classlist link from the course page.
|
If set to Yes, the Ready for Versioning option ensures that any time a change is made to the competency's definition, the existing version is saved in the database and the version number of the competency will be incremented. Leave Ready for Versioning set to No until the competency definition (that is, the competency and its attached learning objectives and sub-competencies) has been finalized.

Ready for Versioning competency
If set to Yes, the Ready for Versioning option ensures that any time a change is made to the competency's definition, the existing version will be saved in the database and the version number of the competency will be incremented. Re-Evaluation competency
There are two types of re-evaluation: automatic and manual. The re-evaluation process examines the accomplishments (such as assignments or quizzes) of all learners enrolled in an org unit with the Can be evaluated permission.

Respondus LockDown Browser
A custom browser that deters cheating by locking down the Quizzes tool in Brightspace. It prevents learners from visiting other websites, accessing other applications, capturing screen content, and printing content displayed by the browser.

Role
The name assigned to a group of users with the same level of access within a particular org unit. A role comes with a set of permissions that can be customized to allow those users to fulfil their responsibilities.
For example, a user might have the Teaching Assistant role in their Beginner Math course and the Learner role in their Elite Math course during the same semester. As a Teaching Assistant, that user has the permissions to see answer keys and grade assignment submissions only for Beginner Math.

In Grades, a grade item type where learners are graded by assigning a grade scheme symbol directly. The learner receives a grade of that grade scheme level's assigned value.

Send-Only Email
An email configuration that allows the sending of emails from Brightspace but prevents emails from being received in Brightspace. Users with send-only email accounts can set their email address to an external account where their email messages will be received.

Shared Competency
A competency created in one org unit but made available for use in other org units.

Shared Display Settings
Control whether shared forums and topics are displayed in the discussions list in a course offering.

Survey tool
A tool similar to the Quizzes tool, Surveys allow instructors to create a group of questions for learners to answer. A survey is conducted to gather feedback from learners. Unlike a quiz, surveys are designed to solicit feedback or develop an understanding of a learner’s knowledge level.

Topic has several definitions, depending on the tool:
- In LOR, a topic is a simple file association, such as a PowerPoint file, an HTML file, a multimedia file, a URL, etc. A topic can contain files, but modules or courses cannot. A topic has no children and cannot be children of a course.

In Content, a topic is the building blocks of instruction, covering one or more closely-related learning objectives. For example, course content is grouped into topics, which are then grouped into modules.

In Discussions, a topic is where discussions take place in the hierarchy of forum, topic, thread, and comment. Instructors create topics inside forums to organize discussions; participants can post and read threads and comments.

Trust
Relationship between a learning repository and an org unit. A trust contains three elements: a learning repository, an org unit, and the trust permissions.

A widget, usually located in My Home, that informs users of any new assignment submissions, unread discussion messages, ungraded quiz attempts, or broken links since the last time the instructor logged in.

User Links
A widget, usually located in My Home, where users can store links that they wish to share with other users or keep readily available for future use.

Every release of a D2L product has a version number. The version indicates the year and month that the version was released. For example, 20.22.1 refers to the January release in 2022.

Weighted System
A type of grading system where grade items and categories are calculated as a percentage of a final grade worth 100%.

Symbol used to replace or represent one or more characters. Wildcard characters include %, [ ], ^ and _.

Page that lists how many groups, discussion forums, lockers, and assignment folders were created for the category.
