Multiple Items in a single deep linking response not working

Hi ,

We are integrating an LTI 1.3 tool with D2L and have encountered an issue with Deep Linking.

For LTI 1.3 Deep Linking launched from "Insert Stuff", our Deep Linking request always contains "accept_multiple: false". Is this expected behavior, or is there a tenant or feature configuration that enables multiple item selection?

If we select and return more than one content item from our tool during the Deep Linking flow, D2L fails to load the content after returning to the LMS. A single item works fine.

Could you please let know if these are known issues with D2L or if there are any recommended configurations or workarounds?

Thank you for reaching out regarding the Deep Linking behavior with your LTI 1.3 integration.

We can confirm that when Deep Linking is launched from the "Insert Stuff" dialog, the accept_multiple parameter is set to false. This is expected platform behavior and is not configurable at the tenant or feature level. As a result, returning more than one content item from the Deep Linking response in this context is not supported, which is why the content fails to load when multiple items are returned.

If your workflow requires the ability to return multiple content items in a single Deep Linking response, we recommend using the "Deep Linking Quicklink" placement instead. This is accessed by learners and instructors through Content > Add Existing Activities, and it does support accept_multiple: true.

Yes "Deep Linking QuickLink" worked and I can now add multiple content items in single Deep-Linking response. But I noticed that custom parameters are not released by D2L in the ID Token for "Deep Linking QuickLink", where as it was working with "Deep Linking InsertStuff". I hope I am not wrong, but I did tried this multiple times.

Also, the D2L JWK url sometimes becomes in-accessible and our tool is unable to validate signature of ID Token. Is this known issue, or just happening in my case? I also use one of my clients Brighspace-D2L-tenant, and same happens with that as well.

Thank you for the follow-up, and we’re glad to hear that Deep Linking QuickLink resolved the issue with adding multiple content items in a single response.

Regarding custom parameters not appearing in the ID Token for the Deep Linking QuickLink placement, we can investigate this on our end. Since the parameters are present when using Insert Stuff but not QuickLink, this may indicate a platform-level discrepancy. Regarding the Brightspace JWK URL becoming intermittently inaccessible, this is not expected behavior. As an immediate workaround, we recommend implementing a short retry with backoff in your signature validation logic. Could you please create a Support case with us so that we can investigate both issues further? If possible, please include the affected keyset URLs and any relevant request or response logs.

Hi Vivek,

Sure I will create support-case for both the issues. For JWK issue, I will implement cache so that the tool reads the JWK from the cache. We will refresh the JWK set from D2L-JWK endpoint only when signature validation fails. But ideally, the D2L JWK endpoint should be reliably available and accessible whenever the tool needs to retrieve the JWK set for ID Token signature validation.
