The platform to which you've posted this question to is known as the Brightspace Community, and this is different than the Brightspace application itself. It is within your organization or institution's instance of Brightspace that courses are typically delivered, and wherein typical course discussion happens.
More than likely, the place where you'll be interacting with your class peers will be the Brightspace application itself. After signing up and being enrolled into a course, you will eventually be granted access to a Brightspace Course Offering. Within your Brightspace course, if the course facilitator has decided to incorporate the Brightspace Discussions tool as part of the course design, it will presumably be therein where you will be encouraged to engage with your class peers.
