What is the difference between the org-related competencies and course-related competencies tool?

I'm trying to add competencies to our courses, and I'm seeing two competency tools, one on the org-related level and one on the course-related level. What is the difference between the two, and is there a way to sync both tools?

    Hello, Bani, how are you?

    My name is Piero and I am a Bilingual Product Support Analyst at D2L. I will be helping you with your question today.

    Event though the Competencies tool can be enabled or disabled at the org level and at the course offering level, it is indeed the same tool that is being used at all times. The reason why the tool can be deactivated at the course offering level is doctrinal: it is easier to control and ensure standards for Competencies when they are created at the org level, while Competencies created a the course offering level can be more easily customized, but they cannot be shared with other course offerings.

    Org‑Level (Organization/Org‑Unit) Competencies

    • Usually are defined by administrators at a higher-level org unit (e.g., faculty or department);
    • Establishes a shared competency structure across multiple courses;
    • Can be shared (“Add Org Units”) so that descendant org units (including courses) inherit the same competencies and achievement criteria;
    • Ideal for ensuring consistent standards, curriculum mapping, and reporting across programs.

    Course‑Level Competencies

    • Are usually created locally by course instructors within an individual course.
    • Tailored specifically to that course’s objectives and assessments.
    • Cannot be automatically synced back to the org level—you’re designing for a single course.

    In regards to synching the Competencies across different organizational units, currently, there is no automated way to do that in Brightspace. You can collect data related to all Competencies in your org by going to the Data Hub and downloading the data sets related to Competencies.

    The "Competency Objects" data set will list all of the Competencies in your organization. This Community article has additional information about it.

    I hope you have found this information to be useful. Should you have any additional questions or concerns, please, don't hesitate to let me know and I will be more than glad to further assist you, okay?

    Thank you kindly,
