Re: Brightspace Data Sets Updates
The Keeping on Top of Brightspace Data Sets blog now includes upcoming changes from December 2024 through February 2025.
Please note: the BDS Major Version 10 release is no longer happening in December 2024/20.24.12; it has been tentatively postponed to March 2025/20.25.3.
Regarding the Course Calendar Feature
Hello Community,
We are fairly new users to Brightspace. A couple instructors who are early adopters have some questions regarding the functionality of the Calendar tool. Rather that trying to rearticulate their comments, I'm going to provide the words below. I would appreciate any guidance that you can provide with this.
Instructor 1:
We have the ability to add calendars to our course calendar, but only if they already exist. Is there a way to construct our own calendar and add it to the course calendar? Or is there a way to use Course Schedule without assigning availability restrictions for every module?
Instructor 2:
The biggest thing is being able to customize, including creating our own calendars to add to the course calendar, as well as custom categories to filter the calendar events. As an example to help clarify, I would be envisioning an application where course content (modules) is one calendar and course assignments would be another. Filtering can accomplish that (with more clicks), but I think having the ability to create our own calendars would give instructors more flexibility to fully utilize the calendar/scheduling tools.
Can you please advise?
Thank you,

Why can't we set the permissions for a Dept Contact at dept level to enroll a facilitator?
We are trying to enable a Dept Contact in a course to enroll a facilitator but the latest security patch seems to present an obstacle that we can't overcome. The Course URL is

How to use APIs in Custom Widgets
I am attempting to use this endpoint:
https://(our brightspace sandbox).brightspace.com/d2l/api/lp/1.9/enrollments/users/(test user ID that exists and has valid enrollments)/orgUnits
Purpose - Create a Custom Widget that will allow students to see any Inactive Courses they are enrolled in by parsing JSON responses to pull the Course Name and its active/inactive flag.
I am getting results, which means this endpoint is working.
Like someone else from a post I saw previously, I have loaded my OAuth2.0 client ID and client secret into my JS file (saved on Brightspace). I know this is not ideal from a security endpoint, but I wanted to see if I can get the data first before handling security issues.
Are widgets just unable to use APIs to display information like Enrollment Data?
Questions Regarding Completion Tracking
Dear Community,
We are fairly new to Brightspace, an instructor has some questions about the Completion Tracking feature within Content Settings. The instructor would like to set her account's default to Not Required. Is it possible for that preference to be set by an individual without making the change for the entire institution? Secondly, she would like to know if there's a way in which students can change their individual setting to Required or in some comparable way if they would like to check items as completed.
I would appreciate your advice on this.
Thank you,

Lumi Doesn't always show up
Anyone else out here using Lumi? We are just moving to D2L and have gotten Lumi Pro (not Creator). It is set to be available for specific roles right now as we get the hang of it. The issue I'm having is that the button doesn't always show up when I create a new assignment, quiz or discussion. Has anyone had that experience or ideas to "fix" it?
Thanks!

Please address problems with pagination in quizzes
I cannot understate how frustrating it is to not be able to use "Sections" to break up my quiz content where I want. Not everyone wants to use 5 or 10 questions per page. Not everyone wants a break after every question. Not everyone wants one long page of questions. The rigidity of the current system is having a significant and consequential impact on how instructors can meaningfully and pedagogically structure their quiz content.
I have tried to "work around" these limitations using "Legacy paging" but it's so ad hoc, inconsistent, and unforgiving. It just feels like guesswork. Not to mention the fact that, if you switch out of "Use legacy paging," and try to go back, you'll find that the option has disappeared from your "Paging" menu.
I need to see a fix for this somewhere on the Roadmap or at least get a sense that someone somewhere is working on it.
One possible stop-gap solution would be to change the menu option to "Add page break BEFORE each section" rather than after (suggested by Chelsey Yeslech 7 months ago). Sections are often used for instructions or to add readings or audio, so this would be a better option than adding the break after a section.
I want to be able to do this:

Others are also frustrated by the loss of this heavily-used component:
Reinstate manual paging for quizzes (D10647)
New Quiz Experience: Questions per page and manual page break placement need to return (D9915)
Manually add page breaks in the New Quiz design (D9327)
Pagination not working with Sections in quiz
BUG REPORT: fix pagination problem when inserting question into quiz (D8209)
* I raised this issue in 2021 and it persists today, causing havoc under the surface of "Use legacy paging".
