D2L is passionate about creating solutions that ignite the desire to learn. We are constantly updating our product offerings to bring new solutions and features to market. As part of the ongoing life cycle of product innovation, we sometimes discontinue the sale and support of certain products and services. That time has come for the Self Assessments tool.
What is the Self Assessments tool?
Self Assessments is a formative assessment tool that enables instructors to provide learners with a series of questions and immediate feedback for responses.
Why are we making this decision?
The Self Assessment tool is a legacy tool with a very limited set of features & functionalities. It has a very low usage rate - less than 1% of instructors use the Self Assessment tool. Additionally, we have similar functionality within the Quizzes tool. You can set up a Quiz without a link to the Grade book and to not show any point values when learners take the Quiz.
For further comparison between Self Assessments and Quizzes please refer to the following Blog Post:
Additionally, we have Practices within our Creator + offering and we also offer similar functionalities with H5P interactives within Content.
What is the Impact and Transition plan?
Sept 2026
With the Sept 2026 (20.26.09) release users will find an End of Life notice displayed within the Self Assessment tool.
Additionally, you can find more details on how to migrate your Self Assessment to a Quiz in the following Blog Post:
January 2027
As of the January 2027 (20.27.01) release you will no longer be able to create new Self Assessments within the Self Assessment tool. Additionally, you will find a migration utility within the Quizzes tool to automatically migrate all the Self Assessments within your course into Quizzes.
Note: Once the migration utility has migrated all the Self Assessments to be Quizzes it will remove (delete) the Self Assessments.
May 2027
The Self Assessment tool will become disabled (no longer available to end users) with the May 2027 release (20.27.05). Additionally, Self Assessments will no longer be available in the Course Copy/Import/Export utility.
Note: Users can still migrate existing Self Assessments into Quizzes from the Migration Utility available in the Quizzes tool (Existing Self Assessment data is still stored within the LMS database).
December 2027
All existing Self Assessment data will be lost with the December 2027 release (20.27.12). The Self Assessment tool code and associated tables will be deleted with no option for recovery.
