Self-assessments (SA) are useful for private learner reflection, but Quizzes provide a more flexible and valuable experience for most practice and formative assessment scenarios. With Quizzes, instructors can view learner responses, access question statistics, use release conditions, include activities directly in Content, and create low-stakes experiences using options such as hidden point values or zero-point questions.
If you have questions currently stored in a Self Assessment, you can easily reuse them in a Quiz by moving them through the Question Library.
Question Library is the central repository for storing and reusing questions across quizzes, surveys, and self-assessments. D2L suggests creating or consolidating questions in that space to make them easier to store, organize, and reuse.
Questions from a self-assessment saved in the Question Library can be directly used to create a Quiz.
Before You Begin
You need the following permissions:
- Self-assessment access, including permission to view setup and to add/remove questions from self-assessments. The Add/Remove Questions from Self Assessments permission also requires See Question Collection Tool and Create Questions and Sections permissions.
- Quizzes access, including View Quizzes, View Quiz Setup, Create Quizzes, Edit Quiz Properties, and Add/Remove Questions from Quizzes. The quiz question permission also requires See Question Collection Tool and Create Questions and Sections permissions.
- Access to Question Library, which requires Question Collections (Question Library) permissions and permissions for Quizzes, Surveys, or Self Assessments.
How to Migrate the Questions
Scenario 1: Import your SA questions to the Question Library and use them in a Quiz
If your SA questions only exist within the Self-assessment where they were created, you can import them into the Question Library.
Import the questions to the Question Library
- Navigate to Quizzes, Surveys, or Self-Assessments.
- From the tool navigation, select Question Library.
- In Question Library, use Import and then Browse Existing Questions to add questions from an existing Brightspace source, such as a Self Assessment.
- On the next screen, select the self-assessment that contains the questions you want to reuse.
- Import the required questions into the Question Library.
Note: You can organize the imported questions into a Section in the Question Library if you want to keep the migrated self-assessment questions grouped together. Think of these sections like folders for organizing questions by type or topic.
Create the quiz
- Select Done Editing Questions.
- Navigate to Quizzes: Course Admin > Quizzes.
- Create a new quiz. Give it a title.
Note: SA questions are ungraded. If you want to keep them that way, ensure the Quiz has zero points and is Not in the Grade Book.
Add the questions to the quiz
Tip: If you select a section from the Question Library, you can import all the self-assessment questions in that section at once.
- On the quiz editing page, select Add Existing.
- Select Browse Question Library.
- Select the questions or the section that you created with the self-assessment questions.
- Select Import. The selected questions are added to the quiz.
Note: Questions created in the Self-Assessments tool don't have correct answers.
If you want to keep that concept:
1. Select the questions that you don't want point values associated with.
2. Navigate to More Actions > Set points.
3. Set zero points for each question. Select Save.
Tip: You can also select Hide question point values under Timing & Display.
Finish editing the quiz
- Select Save and Close when you finish editing and reviewing the quiz questions.
Scenario 2: Import your SA questions directly to a Quiz
Add the questions to the quiz
- Navigate to Quizzes: Course Admin > Quizzes.
- Open an existing quiz or create a new quiz.
- On the quiz editing page, select Add Existing.
- Select Browse Question Library.
- Change the Source Collection. Choose the SA from which you want to import the questions.
- Select the questions you want to import.
Good to know
When you import or add questions from Question Library into a quiz, Brightspace creates a duplicate version of the questions. One version remains in Question Library, and the other version resides in the quiz.
If you delete an imported question from the quiz, it does not automatically delete from Question Library. Changes made inside the quiz affect the quiz copy, not the original question in Question Library.
