Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone else has seen this issue with Brightspace quizzes.
We’ve had a few cases where a student was writing an exam and the quiz attempt log shows their written responses being saved normally throughout the exam, but when the time limit expired and Brightspace automatically submitted the quiz, the answers were suddenly saved as 0 characters.
I reported a very similar issue to D2L in the past, but unfortunately we never got a clear resolution or root cause. We’re now seeing the same pattern again.
One thing we’ve noticed is that this seems to happen most often when all questions are displayed on one page. We try to avoid using that setup for longer written exams, but some course instructors still prefer to have the full exam displayed on a single page.
In the most recent case, the log shows the student’s answers saving correctly for almost the full 3 hour exam. At the end, the sequence was roughly:
- Question 5 saved with 1,318 characters
- Page 1 saved
- Question 1 saved with 0 characters
- Question 2 saved with 0 characters
- Question 3 saved with 0 characters
- Question 4 saved with 0 characters
- Question 5 saved with 0 characters
- Page 1 saved
- Quiz time limit expired
- Quiz automatically submitted
The student’s earlier saved responses included several thousand characters, so it looks like the answers had already been successfully saved before the final auto submit.
The student was also monitored throughout the exam using our e-proctoring tool, which continuously captured their screen. We reviewed the monitoring information and there’s no indication that the student had another copy of the quiz open in a second tab or browser window. The Brightspace attempt log also doesn’t show any quiz re-entry during the exam.
Because of this, it seems unlikely that the answers were overwritten because the student had the same quiz attempt open in multiple tabs or sessions.
Another thing I noticed is that there was no Session ID shown for this student’s attempt, while I’ve seen Session IDs listed for other students. I’m not sure if that’s related, but it stood out.
Has anyone else seen this before, especially with quizzes where all questions are displayed on one page?
I’m also wondering if there’s a known issue where the final page save during auto-submit can overwrite previously saved written responses.
