Is There a Way to Tie Quiz Access to In-Person Attendance?

I'm wondering if anyone has implemented a workflow in Brightspace where attendance in an in-person class determines access to an associated quiz.

For example:

• Student attends Monday's class → they can access and complete Monday's quiz later from home.
• Student misses Monday's class → they cannot access Monday's quiz.

If a student has a valid reason for missing class, the instructor would like the option to grant access afterward.

The challenge is that these quizzes occur almost daily, so we're looking for a solution that can scale without requiring a significant amount of manual management.

Has anyone used Attendance, Release Conditions, Groups, Special Access, or another Brightspace tool to support a workflow like this? If so, I'd be interested in hearing how you approached it.

If you are looking to restrict quiz access based on in-person attendance, one approach is to use numeric grade items in combination with release conditions.

You would create a numeric grade item for each class session (e.g., "Mon Attendance") with a maximum score of 1 point and a weight of 0, so it does not affect the final grade. After each class, you would enter a score of 1 for students who attended and leave the field blank for those who were absent.

For each corresponding quiz, add a release condition under the Restrictions tab. The condition type would be Grade Value, set to the relevant attendance grade item, with the criteria "greater than or equal to 100%." This ensures that only students marked as present can see and access the quiz.

If a student has a valid reason for missing class and you would like to grant them access afterward, you would update their attendance grade item from blank to 1. The quiz will then become visible to them immediately.

A few important notes:

• Leave absent students' grades as blank rather than entering a 0, as the release condition checks for a grade value of 100%.
• You can enter attendance grades in bulk using CSV import if needed.
• The entire structure (grade items, quizzes, and release conditions) will carry over when you copy the course to a new offering, so you would only need to build it once.

I would recommend setting this up in a test course first to confirm the workflow meets your needs before applying it to a live course.
