Assignments and release conditions

I have a blended class with optional in person activities and online work that students can complete completely independently using a self-paced model.

In order for students to not be overwhelmed with assignments, I use release conditions based completing the previous assignment (submission to dropbox or completing a quiz or discussion post).

However, sometimes students haven't progressed as far in the online work, but then take part in the in-person activities. The reflection/assignment connected to the in person activity appears later in the course than what they currently have access to.

When a student hasn't proceeded far enough, because of the release condition, I can't move ahead to submit an assignment on their behalf by impersonating them. I can evaluate the dropbox without impersonating them, but submitting a file on my end appears as feedback and not a student submission, so by the time they arrive at the assignment it doesn't automatically unlock the next one due to the release condition.

Is there a better release condition that I should use that better would serve my needs in this blended model?

An option to consider is to use a Grade Item as an additional release condition:

Create a grade item such as 'Activity Completion' or similar. Attach 2 release conditions to the 'reflection/assignment', with the 'Any condition must be met option' selected:

1. Submission into the 'pervious assignment' condition
2. Grade value of a grade item → you manually add a grade value when required to this

If release condition 1 has not been satisfied by the learner, you can manually enter a grade value for 2. The release condition for the next assignment/activity is met.
