Content time tracking
I am experiencing an issue with the time tracking on a content page in D2L. I observed that a student spent several minutes on page 4.2 of Module 4 (questions 13 to 24), which was documented via screen sharing. However, D2L shows 0 seconds of time spent on this page, even though the date is correct.

What you’re seeing can happen due to how Brightspace tracks time on content.
Time spent in Class Progress is an estimate based on browser activity, not an exact measure. Because of that, it’s possible for a student to spend several minutes on a page (even confirmed via screen sharing) while Brightspace records 0 seconds.
This typically occurs in scenarios like:
- The content is open in another tab or window
- The page is left open without tracked activity
- Temporary connection issues occur
- Browser settings or extensions interfere with tracking
So seeing the correct date but 0 seconds is not usually a defect—just a limitation of how tracking works.
For reference, these Community articles explain it well:
In general, time tracking is best used as a high-level indicator of engagement, not a precise measure.
