One of my instructors asked if it's possible to hide course codes from the code selector.
I checked various settings and config variables, but don't see an option to do it.

Yes, this is a function of the Admin Tools > Language Management tool. If you have sufficient permissions, you can go to Language Management and click the desired language pack (presumably "English") to customize it.
Set the Tool Package to "Framework" and click the icon to search. Look through the results for "txtCourse". The default is "[0] - [1]", which shows the course name and code separated by a dash. In the Custom Value field you can enter "[1]" by itself which will show just the course code.

Another thought occurred to me: If you didn't want this change to affect everyone you can make a copy of your language pack, edit that copy, and then individuals can select it in Account Settings > Locale & Language (you could also apply a customized Language Pack at the course level).
