Grading is very slow in Brightspace
Why don't the documents automatically appear when the grading view pops up, then there's 1 click to submit grades or better yet, why can't i just hit the enter key, and then the next student's submission automatically appears without me having to click next?
Is there a better, faster, more stream-lined way to grade in Brightspace? If so, please tell me.
Re: Grades: Internal Error
Hi all,
We (at Minnesota State) experience this issue on an intermittent basis. According to D2L, the issue occurs after reordering and/or deleting a larger number of grade items from the 'Manage Grades' screen. This causes the 'Enter Grades' screen to be out-of-synch and an internal error message displays.
Here's our workaround and resolution:
- Workaround: Copy the OU # of the affected course, go to a good course and navigate to the 'Manage Grades' screen, at the end of the URL replace the OU# with the one you copied, press enter, now you can access the 'Manage Grades' screen in the affected course.
- Resolution: From Manage Grades in the affected course, click More Actions > Reorder, click save without making any changes. You should now be able to access the Enter Grades page in the affected course.

OK @Stefanie.B.518 I will do that, thanks for confirming the differences! :)
Re: Product and Services Preview updates
The October 2024 Product and Services Preview is now available. As was mentioned in July, August, and September, to provide Product and Services Preview information to a wider audience, D2L is making some changes to the Product and Services Preview page:
- To improve the content's reach, we are localizing this content into French (fr-ca), Spanish (es-mx), Portuguese (pt-br), Dutch (nl-nl) and Arabic (ar-sa).
- To improve it's findability using the Brightspace Community search function, we are changing the distribution from an attachment to being embedded text in the article. As of the September publishing cycle, the PDF is no longer available for this resource.
Re: Community Feedback🗨️
Hi @Janet.O.779,
Thank you for your valuable feedback. We have implemented the enhancements you suggested:
1. The header row on the Fixed Issues embedded workbook is now frozen, allowing it to remain visible while scrolling through the data.
2. We've added a tip in the callout boxes to guide users on how to utilize the filter and sort functions on the headers for more efficient navigation.
We appreciate your input, as it has helped us improve the user experience. 🙂
Re: Transferring text into an html page in one course from another html page in another course.
If you're up for a bit of coding, you could create an HTML template that includes a script tag which calls a bit of JavaScript sitting in Public Files. You also include a container div tag for the user's content to sit in.
Within your JavaScript you can do a find and replace in the div innerHTML (either with JQuery or just read the contents into a variable, do str_replace and output it back to the innerHTML). So if they enter [integrity] your code replaces that with the appropriate template for academic integrity. (You may even be able to do it on the body element to avoid somebody being able to delete your div and break it.)
Re: ActivityId is null for Discussions and Assignments, but is populated for Quizzes
@Matt.J.517 It looks like you may also be connecting here as a partner. I would recommend reaching out to partners@d2l.com.
I don't believe there is a public facing api route that can support this workflow, but for partners there may be other ways of achieving this goal working with the D2L Partners Team.
Re: Is Visit a content item condition met when admin impersonates a user?
Makes sense. Thanks for this. It was my best guess. Certainly the normal case is one wouldn't want impersonating to change a learner's status,
A few years ago, we had some courses that relied on an old tech product to produce a SCORM and were able to use impersonate to "clear" the faulty retention of what we referred to in the SCORM object as "bookmarks" for students in cases where platform problems meant completion wasn't retained between sessions. We redeveloped so this isn't a problem with our new versions but I was in the habit of "yup done that" being retained when impersonating because of this issue which was — in retrospect — a function of the tech used to create the SCORM back around 2015. I don't anticipate needing to "clear content" for current students in BrightSpace itself or in newer SCORM objects so it will be the rare situation (like the one I was working on when I discovered the issue reported here) when I'd want an "impersonate" session to change status for the student.
You mentioned testing. When one switches from admin to "View as Learner" one does get checkmarks for the "student view" version of oneself so that solves that use case. An instructor or admin can test conditional release using "View as Learner".
Re: "Work to Do" widget
I agree. What is the point of having the 'work to do' list if one of the main elements of the course is not built into it?
I work with neurodivergent teens on Brightspace. They enjoy the 'work to do' list, as it helps their executive functioning skills; buuuut, they get quite dysregulated when they miss discussions. So now I've had to create assignments that say "please do the discussions". I've had to post announcements and send messages to parents, reminding them to check discussions. That's A LOT of work for something that should be intuitive.
Everything about Brightspace lacks intuition. I find myself clicking ten to twenty extra times per task. As a teacher, Brightspace demands more of my time than any other system I've used. Very disappointing and frustrating.
Checking when student was admitted to Brightspace?
Dear community,
I am trying to figure out how to confirm the date a student was added to my course Brightspace. I do not admit students manually, when someone is on the waiting list and there is a free spot, students get automatically added. The question here is how to check when they first got added, and not when their last log-in was.
Thank you very much!
