grade point bonus after max point of category reached
How would you answer this instructor's question: "
I am wondering about how to set a point value (total) for a grade category but then allow for points past that “max” to count for bonus.
For Example – the Class Participation Category has 38 in-class quizzes which are 2 points each (for a total of 76 points); however, we would like the “maximum” grade for the category to be 50 points and anything beyond that count as extra credit.
We also have a Reading Questions quiz category with 203 points possible (spread over many grade items); we would like to set the “maximum” at 153 points and then anything beyond that count for extra credit." Thank you.

Hi Goran,
The change in the gradebook can be done, but I would advise the instructor to try it in a test course/sandbox first.
Weighted grading requires the right setup to ensure all categories add up to 100%. Testing this would make sure that the changes have the intended effects.
I, personally, wouldn't change a live course, with real grades, without testing first how the conversion would make the grades look like.
Best regards,
Gabriel

Hello Goran,
Thank you for reaching out to us via Community.
To answer your questions of how to set a point value (total) for a grade category but then allow for points past that “max” to count for bonus.
- Go to Grades
- Manage Grades
- New Category or edit an existing category
- Enter the weight you would like the category to be
- Checkmark 'Allow category grade to exceed category weight'
Now, taking a look at the example you mentioned with 36 quizzes and each quiz worth 2 points, if you set the category to 50 points and mark the exceed weight option for the category, you will notice the max points will show as 72, and the weight will show as 50. The final grade will update accordingly, you may also mark the exceed marks option there if it is possible for students to achieve higher than 100% as their final grade.
The same concept applies to the 'Reading Questions quiz' category you mentioned. You can also search for additional information, and many resources will come up. One I believe would be useful and worth looking over is this.
I hope that answered your questions and cleared things up! 😊
Kind Regards,
Mian

Thank you. To that, the instructor would have to change the grading system from point to weighted. So would you advise changing the grading system to weighted from the point system it is now? Thanks.

Hello @goran.m.816
Yes, you can change the grading system to weighted from the point system.
I would still recommend you to try the same in a test course and see the changes if that is to your expectation and then proceed with changes to the live course.
