Naming of Sections from SIS

We are brand new to D2L. We have painfully discovered that our section naming from our SIS is not helpful to faculty when sending emails from the Message Alerts tool. Same experience when trying to publish Kaltura to a course. I would like to know what others are doing with their sections.

Everyone is a bit different but from what I've seen, it's common to use very similar naming between both the Course Offering and Section. Here's one example that I really like:

Course Offering Name	Introduction to Biology Section A Fall 2026 CO	CO for Course Offering
Course Offering Code	CO.BIOL1001.46758.20271	46758 is the unique identifier for that specific course and 20271 is the semester code
Section Name	Introduction to Biology Section A Fall 2026 SEC	SEC for Section
Section Code	SEC.BIOL1001.46758.20271

Sometimes the SIS, depending on what you're using, could generate very long unique code for the Section Code (e.g. f8876g24-pe8b-4138-8t2b-38f4cf1fwb6). In these cases you'd need to do some modifications on your end to manage how the SIS will assign the code and instead use what works better for you.
