I want to provide a grade for the initial discussion post (out of 5 points) and a second grade for their reply to one of their peers (out of 3 points). Is it possible to set this up and link it to the gradebook? If so, how?

Brightspace’s Discussions tool allows a discussion topic to be linked to only one grade item in the gradebook. There isn’t a built-in option to split grading within a single topic (for example, separating the initial post and peer reply into different grade items).
As a workaround, you can create two separate discussion topics:
and link each topic to its own grade item in the gradebook.
