Rubrics set to all-or-nothing when I use them. Level 4 can only be 100%; but Ss work isn't perfect
My other issue is grading assignments using the provided Level 'fill-ins'. I can't seem to indicate that a student "just made it into Level 4 in one category"; or was a Level 4+, etc. I can only select Level 4, which Brightspace insists is 5/5 = 100%. Therefore, I have to override the TOTAL ( to be more accurate to the level of achievement, e.g. lower Level 4). This is creating confusion when reporting back to the students their achievement. E.g. their achievement being closer to an 85% in a category (not perfect at 100%).

Hi Vanessa👋,
I hope you are doing well! Thank you for reaching out to the Brightspace Community with your question about rubric grading.
From what I understand, you’re trying to reflect more nuanced achievement levels (such as “just made it into Level 4” or “Level 4+”) rather than assigning a full score of 100% when selecting Level 4.
Brightspace rubrics assign a fixed score to each level by default, so selecting Level 4 (if that is your highest level) will automatically apply the maximum points for that criterion. If you need more flexibility—such as awarding partial points within a level or ensuring Level 4 does not always equal 100%—you may need to adjust the rubric type or use manual score overrides. Alternatively, you could create additional levels (e.g., “Level 4 – 100%” and “Level 4 – 85%”), but this would require modifying the rubric structure.
Could you clarify your goal a bit further? For example:
- Are you looking for a way to enter fractional scores within a level?
- Or do you want to configure the rubric so that Level 4 represents a range (e.g., 85–100%)?
- Or do you not require points at all and only need the rubric for qualitative feedback?
Ultimately, the best way to assist would be to review your specific setup directly in your environment, so we recommend opening a support ticket with your organization’s Help Desk.
Please let me know if I’ve misunderstood your request, and feel free to share more details so we can assist you better🙌
