Dropping the lowest grades from an assessed discussion post
Hi there, my institution has recently switched to Brightspace, and I am helping our educators move their assessments into the new system.
It's been going well but I have hit a wall with a very specific problem; In this course, students must write weekly responses to articles (the educator wants to use the discussion board feature for this). Each reading response is marked, totaling 40% of the final grade. I have successfully set up the discussion board with individually marked posts, but the snag is that student are supposed to write 12 responses over the semester, of which only the top 10 are counted for the final grade.
I know how to exclude the lowest grades from multiple assignments using grade categories, but because the discussion board is treated as a single entry in the grade book, I was unable to use this method.
Alternatively, I tried setting up a grade category with 12 sub entries, selecting the option to drop the 2 lowest. However, I was not able to attach all of these grades to the single discussion assignment.
Is anybody able to suggest how to proceed? Or if anyone has set up assignments like this before and can offer alternate suggestions, I would be happy to hear them.
Ngā mihi,
Rhian

Hi @Rhian.G.2975 ,
This will work, as long as you treat each discussion topic as its own entry in the gradebook, not as one single entry.
You must create a grade item (not a grade category), for each individual discussion post. Then you can associate each individual discussion topic to its own grade item.
The overall category can be worth 40% and then you can drop the two lowest as you mentioned.
Hope this helps!
