Hi everyone,
Given that an automatic late penalty is not a feature in Brightspace (and not gaining much traction in PIE), I am curious how other institutions/organisations are currently applying deductions for late submission penalties, please?
Mostly, our academics are calculating this manually, but this is time-consuming and problematic. We do have some using a grade item and a formula for each assessment, and others using a negative 'Bonus' grade item value. However, both of these are problematic and do not align with plans for a university-wide automated, consistent gradebook set-up and transfer process.
Both methods still involve manual calculation of the amount to deduct, so it can be prone to error. We see inconsistencies in how academics/markers interpret and apply the University policy - i.e. when the first 24 hours starts, or where they apply the penalty e.g. 5% from the maximum value or 5% from the student's mark. Both also require careful explanation for students, particularly the 'Bonus' given it shows as a 'Bonus' in the student view of the gradebook.
These are the PIE items I have found, but both have been around for a while with little traction.
