Where does Nickname show for students?

Students have the ability to add a nickname to their profile but this does not appear to show anywhere in a course. Is this an outdated option? I could not find any documentation about it.

Thanks,

Karen

  • Hello @Karen.R.7164 ,

Thanks for reaching out Brightspace Community.

In Brightspace, there isn't a direct nickname field for students, but users may be able to set a preferred name, which functions similarly. If enabled by the institution, students can update their preferred name by navigating to Profile > Account Settings.

Administrators can also set a preferred first and last name through the Manage Users tool. This preferred name will appear across Brightspace, including the Classlist, discussions, navbar, assignment submissions, and reports, replacing the legal name. However, a user's legal name remains visible only on the Edit User page.

Please check the below KB article for more detailed information.

Thank you for responding. I am attaching a screenshot of what our students see when selecting Edit My User Profile and there is a field for nickname. Is this an outdated field that I should remove?

  • Hello @Karen.R.7164

Thanks for sharing the screenshot, which clarified that you are referring to the user profile section. These options depend on your organization's chosen settings, which can be controlled in the form elements, as shown below.

You can customize the form elements to add or remove specific fields based on your organization's preferences.

    I hope that helps!
