Survey Questions - Mandatory vs Optional?

I've manually created a survey in D2L for my students (I am not using the question library). However, I can’t find the setting to make one of my survey questions non-mandatory (ie optional) for my students…

Any ideas, folks? Thanks in advance!

  • Hi @James.R.233 ,

To make a Survey question Optional, go into the Survey Question Editor > Click on Edit Values >

Uncheck the box next to the question under Type Mandatory > Save and Close

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply, Janet! I knew about the edit values option, and I tried that before posting here, but even with that option unchecked, my students were still getting the "you have X unanswered questions" error in bold red font after they hit "submit".

It was only after some digging that I found that the "error" in the red font about not completing a mandatory question was not an error at all but was an FYI that a question was "missed". Students could ignore the red font completely and just hit "submit" a second time.

This is an example of a poor user experience, in my opinion. Why would D2L remind students they missed a non-mandatory question? Seems and odd setting to me.

Anyway, thanks again for your reply!
