Is there any way to assign "any" vs "all" of associated activities with competencies?

I use competencies to track course completion and issue course completion certificates. I associate competencies and learning outcomes with course activities; however, this is difficult with differentiated learning paths because if I associated multiple activities the competency requires all of them to be completed.

I've done a work-around where I use a quiz with a T/F style question for them to mark the assignment as complete so I have something in the gradebook to attach the competency to - then added release conditions to the quiz. However, this is redundant and clunky for the learner. It would be better if I could just associate the activity itself - but I need a way to associate "any" vs "all" of the associated activities, similarly to what is done with release conditions.

  • Hello, Shonelle, how are you? Thank you for your engagement in the Brightspace Community!

When we are setting up Competencies, we can choose between the two options below in the Achievement Criteria:

Would using the "any one org unit" option help you in this situation? This would mean that the that specific competency would only need to be achieved once by the Student, in any of the course offerings where it exists, so it could be any of the course offerings in the Learning Path that also has the same competency.

With that said, could you please give me more information about the differentiated Learning Paths that you are using? In what sense are they different from a regular Learning Path? And sorry if I understood you wrong.

Thank you kindly and until later,

    Piero

    Hi Piero,

    Thank you for your response.

Hm, I wonder if this will work. Would different pages inside the same course be considered different org units?

The differentiated learning path looks like this (picture shown):

Learners progress through all five modules of a course; then, for their final assignment, have the choice between four branching scenario activities (authored in Storyline 360 and uploaded as SCORM content). I'd like the competency to be marked as complete once they complete any of the four activities. Unfortunately, the branching scenarios are too large to be combined as one and be self-selected from inside a single SCORM package.

Would you mind directing me to where you see this achievement criteria dropdown? I do not see this in my competencies tool.

    Looking forward to your response.

  • Hello, Shonelle! Sorry for my delay in coming back to you.

I think I will be able to help you faster and better if we have a quick meeting in order to see the release conditions in more details.

Would you be available for a meeting tomorrow or next week? Considering Edmonton's time zone, my hours are from 4:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and then from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Please, let me know what time would work best for you and I will send you a Zoom invitation straight to your e-mail, okay?

    Thank you kindly,

    Piero
