Creating calculated grades
How can I use calculated grades in other calculated grades? The new calculated grades I created do not appear as an option to include in other calculated grades. I read somewhere that I have to make the new calculated grade a "milestone grade" first, but I don't see any option to do that when setting up a calculated grade. This is very confusing!

Calculated Grade items are merely a sum of other selected Grade items. Calculated Grade items cannot be used in other Calculated Grade items because they themselves don't contain any weight/points in Grades, it is merely a tool to do a quick sum of other items. So if you had 1 Calculated Grade that contains Quiz 1, 2, 3… to include that in a 2nd Calculated Grade item, simply select those same Grade items and any other additional items.
The other options you are mentioning regarding Calculated Grade items, you will find below the full list of Grade items when editing/creating it.
These Calculation methods behave as follows:
- Milestone Grade Calculation - drops items from the sum total of the calculation, making the calculation based on the specified weights. (Basically this one is good if you are using a weighted Grade Book)
- Final Grade Calculation - the calculation is similar to the Final grade calculation which scales to fill 100% as items are dropped (when dropped items are in a category, the remaining items in the category will scale to fit 100% of the category)
The main differences here is how the Calculated Grade will handle Grade items that are in categories that are utilizing the dropping settings and handling items in Grade Books utilizing weighted calculation.
Hope that helps!

Thank you for your response, Johnny. Unfortunately, I do not have that option you highlighted, to select a calculation method. Those options do not appear anywhere in my screen. I attach a screenshot showing that right after the list of grade items and before the Rubrics menu, there is nothing showing the option to select between calculation methods. That just doesn't show up anywhere on the screen when I edit the calculated item.

By the way, I have not used the SetUp Wizard for my Gradebook yet. Maybe I need to use that and set up a weighted grading scheme? I have not used that feature because I was worried it might negatively affect all the graded items that exist in my course. Maybe I have to do something with that in order to get that milestone option?

@Laura.B.520 Yes, you can only create calculated grade items that use a Milestone Grade Calculation if your grading system is set to Weighted.
