Want a true "can exceed" grade posted

While it seems like the "can exceed" function should work for exactly this situation, I can't get it to function properly.

I have a quiz that has questions totaling 120 points. I want the maximum score to actually be 120 out of 100…grade inflation in action.

If I set the maximum points to be 100 and check "can exceed," students are seeing their raw score converted to be out of 100 points. If I unpublish and change it to be out of 120, then they see their correct score, but out of 120:

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!

@Kevin.K.545 You should be able to just change the 120 max points to 100 on the grade item (with Can Exceed checked) and the students' scores won't be affected. The issue is when you sync from the quiz; it will only send percentages. So if you want to change the maximum points, you'll need to make changes in the grade book only after all the scores have been sent over.

Thanks, @Jennifer.W.973 - that seems to work! Still rather annoying to have to change the points after the fact. I can't fathom how the "can exceed" is designed to work otherwise if you must set the max points to the "excess" value until after grades are synced. I guess it's designed for a quiz having "bonus" questions as opposed to a quiz where students can actually exceed the max grade with none of the questions set to bonus.
