Full email in Brightspace

Hello Catherine,
Yes, it is possible to configure Brightspace to use external emails instead of creating a separate Brightspace email for users. This can be done by adjusting the settings in Brightspace to allow communication using the external email addresses that students already have (such as their school emails). Here's how you can approach this:
- External Email Integration: Brightspace can be set up to allow users to communicate using their existing external email addresses. These emails can be integrated into Brightspace so that communications sent from the platform go directly to the user’s school email rather than a Brightspace-specific email.
- Email Forwarding: If Brightspace email is enabled, you can configure forwarding rules so that emails sent to a user’s Brightspace email address are automatically forwarded to their school email.
- Disable Internal Email: If you want to fully avoid using Brightspace email, you can disable the Brightspace internal email tool and rely entirely on external email communication.
- User Profiles: Update the students’ profiles with their external email addresses (school emails) to ensure that communications are routed correctly.
I recommend checking with your Brightspace administrator or technical team to configure these options according to your organization's needs. They can make sure that Brightspace is set up to use external emails and help guide the process if any additional configurations are needed.

Hi @Catherine.P.340, thank you for your question!
There is a full email configuration option where users can send and receive emails to both internal and external contacts. External email addresses are managed outside of Brightspace (e.g., email@gmail.com), but you can still associate an external email address with Brightspace email using the email settings.
You can customize configurations by setting configuration variables and permission settings individually and also customize some email permissions by role.
Here are some resources which you might find helpful:
Hope this helps!
