When attempting to do so the grade item does not appear in the list of selectable existing grade items. When creating new from the topic it defaults to a numeric grade item.
@Richard.P.189 Only Numeric grade items can be associated with tools such as Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes. You can set up a grade scheme and apply it to the numeric grade item if you only wanted a letter grade or text label to appear in the grade book.

Thank you for reaching out. It actually does work in the Assignments tool. The grade item appears in the selection of existing grade items and the result is a drop-down menu of the chosen grade scheme. It just isn't working for discussion topics.
@Richard.P.189 Maybe that grade book article I linked isn't completely accurate. I just tested with assignments, quizzes, and discussions and I was able to associate a selectbox grade item with assignments only.
