is there a way to see if an assignment grade was changed in D2L prior to it being published.

Hi Alba,

Thank you for reaching us through community.

If you are looking for whether assignment grade for a user is changed before it is published, you can check that from Grades tool.

Go to Grades tool → Enter Grades pages

Go to the user's name → click on the dropdown → View Event log

And you can see when and by whom the assignment grade was provided.
