Re: Notification settings for faculty
For future visitors to this thread, I've found that the faculty-focused notification settings for things like assignments and quizzes aren't located where one would expect… but there are means for achieving moderately similar results by leveraging other features.
(a) The My Courses widget on the main organization homepage can be configured by your institution's site administrator to display icons under each course tile to indicate unread assignment submissions, quiz submissions, and forum posts.
(b) Instructors can set up automated email notifications of assignment or quiz submissions by entering their address in the relevant field inside the editor window for each activity.
Note that these email addresses do carry over into future iterations of a course when copied, so if you assign a different instructor to a copied course it's helpful to let them know these fields need to be updated!)
(c) Instructors can use Quick Eval to see lists of submissions for all of their courses, or an alternate view that allows them to select by course and activity type. (We have a link to Quick Eval on our main organization homepage so instructors don't have to drill down into a specific course to see it.)
Re: "Start Quiz" Not Showing for Learners
@Maria.B.191 Hi Maria, are you viewing as a learner or did a student report not being able to see the button? The view as learner feature does not allow you to take quizzes so you won't see that button when testing.
Re: Quzzes and surveys open in new tab
Hi @Jeff.L.592
What you could try is to "Create a File", then make the quiz a hyperlink and be sure to have it open in the same space "Frame" as shown here. When students click start quiz, the quiz should open within the same page. Please test it as the demo student to ensure its working as you would like.
Re: Course completion API not returning results?
I haven't used this route before, but I suspect that it is specific to the Grades tool, which is separate from the "completion tracking" setting.
This route may perform the action that you're looking for. I was able to collect the completion status of a user. Some notes about the route:
- The authorizing user will require Completion Tracking permissions. I enabled them all, but I suspect it is "Track Completion Progress in Widget," but others may also impact it.
- Completion Tracking is required to be enabled in the target org unit.
Hope this helps!
Re: Course completion API not returning results?
@Maureen.B.923 Is your LP version variable equal to 1.49? That is (currently) the only supported version. 404 means that the route you're trying to query isn't recognised, not that the information that you provided is incorrect.
Re: Yikes!! "Unsubscribe from notification emails" in the March 2025/20.25.03 release notes
It seems this change has been removed from the March release

Re: How do I delete an LTI Advantage tool?
Quizzes in which all questions are toggled to "Bonus" do not publish any score to gradebook
We had a faculty member notice some odd behavior recently: while attempting to make an extra-credit quiz, they toggled all of the questions as bonus questions. When attempts are submitted on this quiz, no points appear in the gradebook, only showing a dash (-):
Checking the student's submission shows that it did record the number of questions correct, and shows the total out of a maximum of one point:
However, the quiz has no impact on the student's final grade. Obviously the ideal way to create an all-extra-credit quiz would be to check the "Bonus" option on the quiz in the gradebook, but I can see how someone could reasonably assume that setting each individual question in the quiz as "Bonus" would have the same effect.
I did some testing to on this issue, and can confirm that the same behavior occurs whether or not any combination of the "Bonus" or "Can Exceed" options are checked on the quiz.
This is a pretty niche use case, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "Known Issue", but I couldn't find it mentioned anywhere else so I figured it should at least be documented.
Re: Issue with Pulse app not displaying Brightspace elements
Hello @Tania.J.7661,
Thank you for adding the screenshots here!
After reviewing this issue, I found that it is related to an existing defect on our end. Unfortunately, we do not have an (ETA) for the fix at this moment.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to resolve this matter.
Best,
Rusha
Yikes!! "Unsubscribe from notification emails" in the March 2025/20.25.03 release notes
If the new "Unsubscribe from notification emails" function works as described, there is going to be a faculty uprising on my campus!
Currently, faculty post critical timely announcements in Brightspace with the confidence that the information is also sent out via email. From what I understand from the release notes, if a student receives even one email notification from any course, past or current, there will be an unsubscribe link, which will disable ALL notifications from ALL notification types in ALL classes… Forever! (Or until they manually log back in to re-configure their notification settings, which isn't likely). Is this how the unsubscribe link function works? I hope I'm misinterpreting the information.
I understand that this was implemented so that "users without access to Brightspace may have continued receiving notifications" from classes they're no longer taking, but this directly impacts students currently taking classes who need important communications. In addition to announcements, this also means they'll never again receive emails reminding them of assignments due in 48 hours. Does this update also disable all notifications in Pulse?
I strongly disagree with the determination that this is a "slight impact to instructors and learners." We need the ability to enable/disable this "feature" depending on how our institutions utilize Brightspace. All of our courses are generated with end dates, which automatically stop notifications, so this isn't solving a problem - it's creating one!
Please put a pause on implementing this function until D2L receives feedback from institutions!
