Instructor created a rubric but some values are incorrect and it has already been used

As the subject says. I'm a new admin, and one of the rubrics that was attached to a course (the rubric predates my employment) was incorrect. The total points available from all items is lower than the scoring metrics. This wasn't discovered until the instructor had already input grades for some students. How can I either correct the grades or remove that rubric from the course? I have already created a copy with the scoring corrected.

Thanks!

  • Hello @Traverse.D.852, thanks for your question.

I did some testing and I think one option you have is to remove the incorrect rubric from the Assignment settings area.

Per my testing, once this happens, it will be removed from each learner submission, but the score that was assigned to them (the overall score) will be retained and continue to be displayed.

After you've removed the incorrect rubric, you can add the correct one. This updated rubric will be available within Assignment submissions and can then be used to re-evaluate a learner. Once levels are selected, the overall score will be updated inline with the new rubric.

I'd say you also have the option to remove the rubric from the Assignment and manually update each score, or even just leave the incorrect rubric attached and update the overall scores.

Hoping one of these options may work for you! If you have any questions just let us know.

    Hello,

Once a rubric has been used to assess submissions, Brightspace stores that evaluation as a snapshot. Because of this, making changes to the rubric (or replacing it with a corrected copy) will not retroactively update existing evaluations.

    Here are your options:

Use the corrected rubric moving forward

Since you’ve already created a corrected copy (which is the right approach):

    1. Edit the activity (Assignment/Discussion/etc.)
    2. Remove the original rubric
    3. Attach the corrected rubric
    4. Save

    Update previously graded submissions

For any submissions that were already evaluated:

    • The existing grades may remain or be recalculated if you change the “Grade Out Of” value
    • However, the rubric itself will not be automatically re-applied

    You will need to:

    1. Open each evaluated submission
    2. Apply the corrected rubric
    3. Re-save the evaluation

    Important notes

    • If the rubric total changes, make sure the assignment’s “Grade Out Of” matches the rubric total to avoid inconsistencies
