Self-Service Course Merge with Naming Restrictions?
Hi all,
We're exploring ways to streamline course merges in Brightspace and are curious if anyone has successfully implemented a faculty self-service merge process that:
- Allows instructors to self-serve merges
- Enforces a controlled naming convention for merged courses
- Does not interfere with enrollment or grade pushback via ILP
- Allows for unmerging of courses by IT staff
Our current process is manual, using the SIS course merge tool. We're evaluating how to streamline it and whether it's feasible with the SIS merge tool and an automated renaming process. We're also interested in what others are doing. Additionally, we're considering implementing guardrails, such as restricting merges to upcoming semesters and preventing self-serve unmerging once complete.
If your institution has tackled this, or if you have documentation, lessons learned, or workflows to share, I'd love to connect. Please reply here or feel free to reach out directly.
Thank you in advance for any information you can provide.

Hi @Jennifer.P.485,
Thank you for reaching out to us through the community!
While you wait for responses from other clients on how they handle this scenario, I wanted to suggest an option: you can allow instructors to perform course merges by granting them the required permissions.
You can find detailed information on how this works and what is needed in the documentation linked below:
Thanks,

Sangeetha,
Thanks so much for your response. We are aware we can allow faculty to self merge but would like to be able to restrict the naming of the merged course to reflect our naming conventions. This tool allows faculty to name the course whatever they want in our scenario it would be helpful to force a naming convention on the new merge course. Currently the plan is for AT staff to use the SIS course merge tool to merge courses and manually name them using the preferred naming convention.

Thank you for your update. This appears to be a feature request from our side.
Could you please log a PIE request at so that our development team can review and provide updates?
Please let me know if you have any further concerns or need assistance with the process.
Thanks,
Sangeetha
