Attempt 1 grade re-sent to gradebook when attempt 2 is submitted but NOT published

TL;DR Why does attempt 1 grade get re-sent to gradebook when student submits attempt 2 (overwriting manually entered grade in gradebook) even though the attempt 2 grade is not published?

The quiz is all Written Response questions and auto-publish attempt results is not checked. Synchronize to grade book on publish is checked. Calculation method is set to Highest Attempt.

  1. Student submits quiz attempt 1.
  2. Instructor manually grades the WR questions and publishes the attempt results. Grades are automatically sent to the gradebook. Student has 29/30 in gradebook.
  3. Instructor later manually changes quiz grade in the gradebook to 0. Student now has 0/30 in gradebook.
  4. Student submits quiz attempt 2. Even though this attempt grade is NOT published, D2L automatically sends the attempt 1 grade to the gradebook again overwriting the manually entered 0. Student reverts back to 29/30 in gradebook.

The timestamps for submitting attempt 2 and the attempt 1 grade syncing to the gradebook are identical. I understand that attempt 1 is still the highest among published scores, but why is it being sent to the gradebook again? (I also tried with Last Attempt selected and it did the same thing.)

Why does D2L automatically sync the attempt 1 grade to the gradebook when the 2nd attempt is submitted but NOT published? Does "on publish" in the explanation of "Synchronize to grade book on publish" refer to any attempt grades being (or having already been) published?

Is the assumption that any manual grading in the gradebook would not be done until after ALL attempts have been submitted? Is the recommendation to only manually change grades on the quiz itself?

    Hi @Jennifer.W.973 ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Brightspace community. I have conducted the internal testing for the shared scenario:

After the third step, i.e., the Instructor later manually changes the quiz grade in the gradebook to 0. The student now has 0/30 in the gradebook.

I tried to submit a second attempt with the same student. Later, I was able to see 0 grades, i.e., for the 2nd Attempt (Since for the WR question, we have to manually enter the grades).

If you have a different observation, I would advise you to create a support case from the ASC portal with the given quiz URL and the sample test student (with whom we can attempt the quiz and test the scenario), as it will require more testing and investigation of the quiz setup to understand your shared observation.

@Tejas.M.9338 Hi Tejas, the instructor will not be grading or publishing the results for attempt 2. They want the original 0 they entered in the gradebook after attempt 1 to remain and not be overwritten.

I've tested this in 3 different courses and the same thing happens. I still don't understand why a student merely submitting attempt 2 would trigger D2L to re-send the attempt 1 grade to the gradebook. It would make sense if the attempt 2 grade were published, but it is not.

This is probably a limited use case with the way the grading is done and I've recommended only manually changing grades in the quiz attempt to ensure this doesn't happen next semester.

    Hi @Jennifer.W.973 ,

I hope you are doing well, and I apologize for the delayed response. Would you be able to create a support case with the following details:

    1. Sample course and Quiz URL where you have experienced this behavior.
    2. One test learner that we can impersonate and attempt the quiz to reproduce this behavior.

Please find the article given:  https://community.d2l.com/brightspace/kb/articles/1175-approved-support-contacts-create-a-case-or-service-request?searchString=ASC%20portal%20create%20support%20case

for creating a support case. This will enable us to conduct a more thorough review of the given quiz and test it internally.

    Best Regards,
