Limiting Dual Submission When Using Release Conditions for Midterm/Final Pairing

Hi,
I want to give my Spring 2026 students some flexibility. For the midterm, they can choose between an Exam or a Paper.

Their final assessment is determined by that choice:

  • If they take the Midterm Exam, they must submit a Final Paper.
  • If they submit a Midterm Essay, they must take a Final Exam.

I've already set up release conditions so that the appropriate Final Assessment is unlocked based on their midterm choice.

However, I haven't found a way to prevent students from completing both the Midterm Exam and the Midterm Essay. Is there a way to restrict them from accessing one midterm assessment after they have completed the other?

    Hi Kendra,

Thank you for reaching out with this question.

Based on what you shared, I would suggest adding release conditions to both midterm assessments and using the following condition type: Quizzes, No completed quiz attempt.

For instance, in the Midterm Essay, select Midterm Exam as the quiz under Condition Details. With this, both assessments will be visible initially, then once a student completes the Midterm Exam, the Midterm Essay will be hidden.

If using assignments, the same can be achieved using this release condition: Assignments, No submission to folder.

    I hope this helps!๐Ÿ™‚

    Thank you,
    John
