I would like to make an assignment in which the students complete a survey in the brightspace course page. It is easy to associate a survey with an assignment but does any one have experience then evaluating if students can be graded based upon their completion of the survey easily? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Daniel,

Great question! Brightspace doesn’t automatically grade survey completion because surveys are designed for feedback rather than assessment. However, you can achieve this workflow using the following approach:

Option 1: Use Release Conditions + Grade Item

    1. Create the Survey in your course.
    2. Create a Grade Item (numeric or pass/fail) in the Gradebook.
    3. Create an Assignment (or Checklist) linked to that Grade Item.
    4. Add a Release Condition: Completed Survey → This ensures the assignment becomes available only after the survey is submitted.
    5. Use Automatic Grade for the assignment (e.g., full points for submission). Students will receive credit once they complete the survey.

    Option 2: Use Completion Tracking

    • Enable Completion Tracking for the survey.
    • Then, use Class Progress or Reports to verify completion manually and enter grades.

Important Note: Surveys themselves cannot push grades directly because they are non-graded tools by design. The workaround is to tie completion to a graded activity using release conditions.

Please, let me know if you still have any more questions.

    Have a great day,

    Raquel
