duplicate / shadow assignments appeared

I somehow have created duplicate assignments within my gradebook that are named "File"(1) or "File"(2). Some of these show up for the students with no grades, others show up with grades twice. I know I have to delete one of the assignments, but which one? I don't want to lose the student grades, or have to enter them all a second time.

@Maryjane.D.6859 You either created a grade item, then created the assignment and another grade item at the same time - or you created one assignment with a grade item, deleted the assignment (which does NOT delete that original grade item), and then created a new assignment and new grade item. Either way, you have two grade items in the grade book but only one is associated with an assignment.

If you are entering grades in the assignment, then you should be able to publish from there and all grades will show up in the second grade item in the grade book. If that's the case, then you can delete the first grade item that should not have any grades entered for it.
