Tracking students' quiz progress by referring to the orange notifications on the Grades page?

Hi D2L community,

Does anyone else here use the orange dot method to track quiz progress of students? & Has anyone encountered the issue where the orange dot disappears but the students quiz progress is still underway?

A few lecturers I know of tend to track students' quiz progress status via the Grades page (i.e. the one from Assignments & Assessments tab > Grades, not the one from the Quiz dropdown).

The student's quiz progress shows up as an orange dot if the student is in the midst of an attempt, and of course, when the student has completed and submitted the quiz, the orange dot disappears (unless it's pending grading from lecturer) and the quiz grade appears. Hence, lecturers are able to identify which students are in the midst of attempting the quiz when they note the orange dot.

Unfortunately, there've been some times when our lecturers report that they are no longer able to see the orange dot. And the next solution would be to use the Quiz > Grades > Search feature to track the students' quiz progress. While this search method works, it's a little bit more of a hassle compared to the orange dot method… which have led a few lecturers to ask about why would the orange dot disappear.

Based on the troubleshooting I've done so far, I believe there's no setting to toggle this orange dot? Appreciate any insights or sharing from the community if any. Thank you!

    @Yi Yan.L.782 Hi Yi Yan,

Thank you for reaching out to us on the Community site.

I have further checked the behavior you reported, where lecturers at your site are no longer able to see the orange dot appear for an in-progress quiz attempt in the Gradebook. I found that it is a known issue and a defect from v20.24.10 onwards.

The defect is registered as 02092465>Grades> 20.24.10.20212 > Red Dot indicator showing quiz in progress not appearing in the Grades tab

I apologize for the issue and any inconvenience this has caused you and the lecturers

    Regards,

    Nik

    Hi there,
I had a faculty report this issue today as well. I have subscribed to this thread and if anyone is notified the bug is fixed, could you possibly update this thread? I will do the same.
    Thanks.

    Hi Nik,

Thanks so much for the update! I am not seeing a resolution in the link you provided → https://community.d2l.com/brightspace/kb/articles/27496

Nor am I seeing it on the "fixed issues" list (which I know can take some time to update). Just curious where you are seeing that this is fixed. I am testing it myself as we speak, and I am still not seeing the dot appear.

    Thanks in advance, Madison

I have the same problem and am able to open that article url only when logged in. It says they are trying to bring that feature back in the November 2024 release but temporarily removed it because there was a bug where sometimes clicking on one student's attempt brought up another student's attempt instead.

@Madison.W.1506 @Elissa.L.7403 Hi Madison and Elissa,

The issue is fixed in the November release. I tested the scenario at our internal testing site running on v20.24.11.18244 and could see the red dot appear for the student in the associated quiz grade item, saying the quiz attempt is in progress.

Please check once your PROD sites receive the update to v20.24.11.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Nik

    Hi @Nikhil.P.90

It seems like the red dot is back, however my instructors are reporting they used to be able to click the red dot, and view almost in real time the student completing the quiz. The same as if you were to go Quiz > Grades > Search feature to track the students' quiz progress.

    Is that the expected behaviour?

I also have received reports and confirmed that while the dot now displays, instructors are unable to click on it to view the quiz in progress as we could in the past. Should I put in a ticket for this, or is it a continuation of the known issue?

@Travis.H.362 I asked D2L and this is by design and not a bug. Their quote was "This change was implemented to improve the overall quiz experience and ensure consistent behavior across different quiz scenarios."

My faculty are not pleased with this change and miss the functionality.

    Hi @Travis.H.362 and @Madison.W.1506
It isn't possible to click into the red dot to see in-progress attempts, but you can use these steps to view the in-progress attempts

On the Grade Quiz page under the Search Options – use the Restrict to option: “Users with attempts in progress”

There's a bit more information on this provided here

In Brightspace, using Grades, Instructors can no longer find in-progress Quiz attempts. - Brightspace

I have shared your feedback here with members of our Quiz Team. Thank you to all of you who've participated here for sharing back with us.
