Edited points always revert back to the previous point amount.

I am updating a template of an existing course. I want to change the point values on som e of the assignments. However, when I edit the points, they don't change when I go look at "manage gradebook" and still show the original point value. Additionally, they are greyed out so that I cannot edit them in that bulk edit area. Then when I go back to the assignment area, it won't let me change it again. What do I do?
