Is there a way to turn off all email/SMS notifications, except for award achievements?

We do not want learners to be overloaded with email notifications, especially from Announcements, however, we do not want to lose the ability to alert them of an award achievement.

We want them to be able to see Announcements while in the learning environment, but not be emailed every time a new announcement is added to multiple courses.

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Hi @Jackie Senuk , Users still have to opt-in to notifications by default; so currently, there is no way to set default states (although read into this that we are looking into this - see PIE: https://desire2learn.brightidea.com/ideas/D1755 )

So.. out of the box all users are not going to have any subscriptions at all...

To help answer the question directly - There are a limited set configuration variables. Search for "Notification" at the root of the Configuration Variable Browser (CVB) to show/hide certain notifications for different tools and set default states for some of the notification options.

You can also enable/disable SMS options if needed . Search for "SMS" at the root of the CVB to find d2l.Tools.Notifications.Methods.MobileEnabled.

I didnt see in my quick scan of notifications any way to prevent or hide limit announcements via email however

NOTE: There are Brightspace API's that can help set notifications for users on a user per user basis if you cant wait and have application developers to build the application and workflows for setting any defaults then API could be a route to explore to set these defaults to enable awards via email and leave other off etc

    Hope this helps.

@Jackie Senuk, it sounds like you might be posting the same announcement in all courses; if that's the case, you could try using Global Announcements. There is an organization level tool called Global Announcements that allows you to post an announcement that is displayed in all courses. This way, students would only get 1 notification for the announcement.

Thank you, @Martin Montgomery and @Jeff Geurts for your responses. There doesn't seem to be a way to do what we want, so we may need to turn off all notifications. We have been using the global announcements tool in addition to announcements in courses, which has caused the issue of too many emails.

I found and voted for PIE: Option to Send/Not Send Announcement Notification (D6095), which I believe would help in our situation. Hopefully it will get implemented!

I did some research in our test environment (which I should have just done first thing 😆 ) and thought I would post the results in case it can help someone else. It looks like the Award notification emails are not tied to the Organization Tool "Notifications".

I went to Admin Tools / Organization Tools and turned off "Notifications". As a learner, I achieved a certificate and was still notified by email. As a Super Admin, I posted a new Announcement and didn't received an email to the learner account, which is exactly what we wanted to happen!
