Why can't we specify due dates for graded discussion topics?

I'm new to Brightspace. I've searched the articles and discussions, but see nothing about what seems like a very natural and obvious issue: Why aren't due dates able to be specified for graded discussion topics? Restricting availability doesn't allow students to post late--neither does locking. I would like to set a due date so students can use their course calendar and notification settings to keep track of their work; but I would also like to allow students to submit late work. I think wanting both of these things at the same time is totally reasonable; no?

You can achieve this by adding the graded discussion topic in the content tool under a module and then specifying the due date for this topic.

 

Please follow the below steps to assign a due date on a graded discussion topic,

1.Go to a course

2.Access the content tool

3.Click on a module where you would like to add this graded discussion topic

4.Click on Add Existing Activities button

5.From the dropdown choose Discussions

6.Click on the Forum name where the graded discussion topic exists

7.Click on Graded Discussion topic

8.Now the graded discussion topic will be added under the module

9.Click on the down arrow next to the graded discussion topic name

10.From the dropdown menu click on Edit Properties in Place

11.Click on Add Dates and restrictions and specify the due date

12.Click on Update

Hello,

 

I came across this article as I am also trying to create discussion threads with due dates for my students. Following the steps above does not work though as there is no option to Edit Properties in Place. Please advise. Thank you!

Sydney- the above didn’t work for me either but then I clicked on the course calendar and found the set dates. You can add it there.

D2L, when can we expect to add due dates for discussions in the same way as for assignments and quizzes? This would also allow us to update these dates in Manage Dates. Thank you, Jane

Agree with many above - while there is a workaround discussed above, I believe there should be more of a focus on providing an actual Discussion due date setting. This would make it consistent with other activities in D2L. Consistency is key to user friendliness. Thanks.
