Best Practices with examples - Announcements
Does anyone have a best practices with examples for Announcements? I find our Announcements are very inconsistent with LARGE FONTS, Colors, Bold and some text that runs on forever. Thanks
Re: Migrating from Blackboard?
Just finished Migrating from Blackboard to Brightspace, well, almost. I still have this term left to do and have to wait until May to do it and then we're officially live.
The most important thing that helped me through the process was patience and lots of it. Using the bulk migration tool and only being able 30 GB worth of Packages in a day was one of the most frustrating parts of it. Having a great team to test functionality and not having to do the course design piece was also a major in our success, so if they ever read this ;)
Alina on the D2L side has been amazing to work with for implementation and answering questions as we rebuilt the System. I think I migrated like 15000 courses or something and so far only 2 of those have been reported to me as having files that were missing. Just for whatever reason the package I uploaded broke the links to only a veryyyy small number of courses. D2L is investigating course #2/2.
Also missing from the Admin side, Direct Database access, will gravely miss that along with System logs. Had to open a ticket to figure out if an email went out from the system because we don't have access to those anymore. But other than that, I'm veryyyy happy with how flexible Brightspace is as far as customizations and a more user-friendly experience than Bb Original and how much fresher the courses look.
Privileges/Roles/Org Unit Editor have been some of the biggest struggles with the migration too mostly because we missed important permissions the first time and go back and fix it when someone says “I need this, why don't I have it?".
The creation of new processes related to Feed Files has been one of our biggest headaches too, mostly because we had the ICM tool from Bb doing most of the work for us, but that's mostly just internal issues.
Would be more than happy to answer any questions you have or to help in any way I can!
Regards,
Sam
Re: Missing Notification Email in Assignment Creation
I am experiencing the same issue and haven't seen it on the known issues list yet?
Re: Missing Notification Email in Assignment Creation
Hello @Zoe.E.620
It appears this issue is related to a current defect related to Assignments tool which is missing Notification Email.
Once confirmed, details should be posted to the Known Issues List, reference defect 01844164. You can bookmark the Known Issues List Updates discussion if you would like to be notified when new items are being added.
Thanks and Regards,

Re: What are you using for course evaluations?
@Steve.B.446 Honestly, we have had better luck building the surveys using the Survey Tool in Brightspace. I think students are more inclined to do this because it looks like just another piece of the class than something extra. We are working now on trying to use Insights Report Builder to try to get a report of survey responses.
Export Content in SCORM Compliant Formatting
Hi everyone!
I'm wondering if it's possible to export course content from Brightspace in a SCORM compliant file format? Would be greatly for any guidance through this 😀
User.UserData.LastAccessedDate relecting user creation date?
Hi all,
Has anyone else noticed that /d2l/api/lp/(version)/users/(userId) always returns a value for LastAccessedDate, even if the user has never logged in? The above snippet is for a user created late yesterday afternoon via the API, and we know the user has yet to access our Brightpace environment.
I'm wondering if this is by design (I don't think so as the docco states this value can be null), or if we're doing something at create time to cause this, or if this is a bug…
Thanks!

How to overwrite file when updating topic file
Our course team has a custom app that generates pages from template files and then creates corresponding modules and topics within a course in D2L. This is great for new courses we launch as course designers can play around with the structure of the course in the place we track video and other page information.
A new feature I am looking to build is the ability to update pages. This would be beneficial for future iterations of an existing course as videos, resources, or other page content may change moving forward. The PUT /topic/(topicId)/file API looks promising for this use case. Using it, I am able to update the topic contents as intended.
However, on the backend in the “Manage Files” section of the course, if the file is named the same, it will create a copy each time this API is called (e.g. Page, Page - Copy, Page - Copy (1), Page - Copy (2), etc.). This is explained in the API documentation with the note that “the existing content topic file will not be removed by this action”.
Is there a parameter, or different API route, I can use to overwrite the existing file in place? When creating the topic with POST /modules/(moduleId)/structure/, the default behavior appears to be to overwrite an existing file with the same name (with a parameter renameFileIfExists that can be set to true to not overwrite the file; much like the PUT method). Is this feature available for the PUT method (e.g. renameFileIfExists=false)?
