Re: Use of figcaption vs alt-text?
Hello Nancy,
Both 'figcaption' and 'alt' attributes serve different purposes, and they are both essential for accessibility. 'alt' is used to describe the content to users who are visually impaired or who use screen readers to navigate the web. When an image fails to load, the 'alt' attribute is also displayed in its place, providing users with context about what the image should have been. It is essential to keep 'alt' text short, descriptive, and relevant to the image.
On the other hand, 'figcaption' provides a caption or description of an image, which may include more detailed information than the 'alt' text, such as the author or source of the image. It is beneficial for complex images, such as graphs or charts.
Therefore, using both 'alt' text and 'figcaption' for images is recommended. 'alt' text should be used to describe the image's content. In contrast, 'figcaption' can provide additional information or context.
When using 'figcaption', it is essential to associate it with the corresponding image using the 'figure' element. This helps assistive technologies understand the relationship between the image and the caption.
I referred to WCAG 2.1 Success Criteria 1.1.1 Non-text Content and 1.4.5 Images of Text, which guide providing text alternatives for non-text content and providing descriptive text for images.
Using empty 'alt' attributes with decorative images is generally not recommended, as this can confuse users of assistive technologies like screen readers. Instead, it is best to use a null 'alt' attribute (i.e., alt = "", like you just said) to indicate to screen readers that the image is decorative and does not convey any information.
Regarding using 'figcaption' with decorative images, it is generally acceptable to provide attributions or captions for these images.
I hope I could help!
Re: Sharing Analytics Builder Dashboards
@Daniel.K.5450 You'll need to enable some permissions, such as See Insights Portal Tool and Can Use Insights Report Builder, in D2L for other users to view the dashboards: Administering Insights Reports Builder in Brightspace
Re: Notification settings showing current UI without SMS option
Hi there! We are working on updating all of our videos, but do not currently have an updated video for this one yet.
Re: QUIZ - How do I allow 2 correct answers to a MC question
@Julie.W.7 You can use Update All Attempts and Give to attempts with answer to give points to students who selected the other correct answer: Update grades for all attempts of a quiz question
Re: Shuffling questions from sections
@Kevin.H.200 I've tested this before and could never find a way to get the questions from different pools to shuffle together. The questions for each pool always remained together even if they were put in a section with all the shuffling options turned on.
Re: What are some ways to troubleshoot issues regarding content not loading?
Hi Yi Yan,
Some of the other common suggestions are:
- Do the D2L/Brightspace System Check {your_brightspace_URL}/d2l/systemCheck
- Try connecting to the internet using a different network connection if available: share wifi via mobile, work network, home wireless network etc
- Try a VPN if available
- Disabling browser extensions
- Access the content in Incognito or Private browsing mode
- Access on a personal laptop/computer/mobile vs. corporate/work/school provided device
If all else fails raise a ticket with the D2L Support team.
Hope that helps!
Re: Imported questions from Blackboard
@Laura.W.243 There isn't a way to bulk randomize answer choices in D2L, but there is a workaround to export the questions, edit them in a text editor, and re-import them.
Re: Changing grade of quiz after students have completed quiz
@Holly.A.103 You can retract feedback from the quiz, which will clear out grades in the grade book, and then change the maximum points on the grade item and re-publish the feedback from the quiz. The quiz attempts will remain out of 10 points and the grade item will be out of 5 points in this case. You could also use Update all attempts to change the points on each individual question if you really wanted both the overall grade in quizzes and the grade item to be out of 5 points. Follow directions at Change Quiz Points to Fix Grades.
Re: Bug - Gradebook giving incorrect grades for Quizzes?
@Jason Kenji.H.6718 I'm not sure why that happened, but you should be able to clear out those scores and get the correct ones to sync to the grade book. Go back to the list of quizzes, click the down arrow by the title, and choose Grade. Then select all the students and click Retract Feedback. That will clear out the scores in the grade item. Then select all students again and click Publish to send the scores to the grade book again.
