students want to email their teacher but we don't show the classlist for students

Is it possible for students to easily email their teacher from Brightspace, but we don't want to show the Classlist to students? How can we achieve this?
Thanks for your answer. Regards, Heleen

    Hi Heleen,

Yes, it’s possible for students to email their instructor without showing the Classlist. Here are a few ways to achieve this:

    • Enable the Email tool for students and adjust role permissions so they can send emails to instructors but not view the Classlist or Address Book.
    • Hide the Classlist tool from the course navigation for students using tool availability settings or role permissions.
    • Add a custom widget or content item with a direct mailto: link to the instructor’s email address, allowing students to contact them without needing access to the Classlist.

  • My apologies, I wasn’t clear. The class list is not visible to students. What we want is for students to be able to email the instructor directly from the course using Brightspace’s email tool. Is that possible?

  • Hi Heleen,

    Thank you for following up!

Unfortunately, Brightspace does not currently offer a built-in feature that allows students to email instructors directly from the course without using the Classlist. While students can access the Email tool within the course, they would need to manually enter the instructor’s email address—unless it is made visible to them in some way.

As Raquel mentioned, you can adjust permissions so that students are able to email instructors without seeing other students in the Classlist. However, any further automation or direct email functionality—without exposing the Classlist—falls outside of current Brightspace capabilities and would be considered a PIE (Product Idea Exchange) item.

Please let us know if you’d like assistance with configuring permissions or submitting a PIE request!
